Help Please

i'm going to look at a bg macaw that is up for adoption
was wondering what to ask and how to approach her
the owner said she is about 15 the father can't keep her due to health reasons

How have you been communicating.....by e-mail?

1. How long have they had the bird?

2. Where did they get the bird?

3. What do they feed the bird?

4. When was the bird last examined by a vet?

5. Who is their vet or the last vet that saw the bird?

6. Does the bird have any quirks or attitudes?

7. What does the bird like & dislike?

8. Was the bird ever banded (if no band)...if yes, why was it removed?

9. Has the bird ever been sick? What was wrong? How long a duration?


If you do get the bird & there is no band, I might ask my vet to check for a microchip.....just to rest my own mind.

the guy said his dad has had her for about 10 years
but he couldn't answer much else... I didn't get a chance to talk to the dad

Go see her, and take note of how she is being cared for, how she is housed, how she's being fed. You may or may not get more of your questions answered, and of course you won't really know if the folks will be 100% honest with you.

IF you decide to take her home, have her THOROUGHLY vetted ASAP, and keep her separate from your BF for a minimum of 30 days, or until you have all the results from your Avian vet.
