I have no idea what to do. All the avian vets are unavailable today. I found pieces of the leg but the foot claws - gone. No idea what happened. I put her in a sink with s tiny bit of water so I could use gauze to clean off the stub to see if I could figure it out. She still tries to climb around the cage. What should I do until I can get her to the bet tomorrow?

Where about in AZ are you? I am certain there has to be an Avian Vet on call somewhere nearby.

I have never heard of a parrot 'just' biting off pieces of their own foot. I would truly see this as an emergency, and wouldn't hesitate to start making phone calls. Someone in your area must know who's on call (avian vet).

Okay, if you cannot find anyone near you, for now call one of the 24=-hour vets near me; MSPCA Angell Memorial has veterinarians on staff 24/7 and people to answer the phone for just such things! Their number is

617-522-7282 (press 1)

Where in AZ are you? This is an absolute emergency and you need to call the emergency #. Even if you can't get in touch with an avian vet, any vet is better than none. Even a 'regular' vet can sterilize the wound and get her on life saving antibiotics ASAP so she is at least able to 'wait' to see an AV tomorrow. Start calling any and all vets until you find one willing to help. My moms amazon broke her foot once and no one would treat her as an emergency, so she kept calling until she found a vet (not avian) who would. By that time, an infection had set in and had she not been put on antibiotics, she could have died. You really need your bird seen today.

I agree with everyone else find help now! I also do not think the bird did this, I think you have a mouse or a rat or some other animal that managed to get her leg through the bars. Please get her help right away before shock or infection sets in.

Omg get to a vet!!!! I had a similar thing happen when my Amazon had his stroke..no one would take him!!!! I found a 24 hour vet around the corner...I'm not surprised u couldn't find anyone..I was having a panic attack while making phone calls..there aren't enough avian vets..or like where I live ..they only work half days..please keep us updated on your baby!!

Your poor baby :( I hope you can get her a vet asap. I had a budgie lose a toe to a lovebird and had the same situation, no vets open to see her. But I was able to look after it myself and luckily it was just a toe. Her whole foot is another story.

Put her in an aquarium cleaned and sterilized with a heating pad underneath half of it (she needs to be able to get away from the heat if she wants) and clean the leg. I used polysporin right on it and cornstarch to clot the blood. Keep an eye on her and make sure she isn't licking it to injest the polysporin.

My budgie made it through her toe loss, but again I don't know how well this will work for your bird. Please see an avian vet as soon as possible. If anyone else knows better (if to not use any antibiotics) please let the OP know.

Don't worry about it having to be an avian vet, get it to a animal hospital they have direct contact numbers to on call vets and avian vets. In meantime they can ease the pain....The bird didn't bite it's foot off...something else did.

I hope you got your baby to the vet! Waiting with baited breath for an update. Arizona has a whole slew of wonderful vets both avian and not! That has to be just absolutely terrifying for you! Happy thoughts your way!

I just looked up parrot first aid for my own knowledge and on there the vet said to put polysporin on superficial cuts. Recommended using a cone to prevent injection.

Disclaimer I did not research the actual vet. I don't know if other vets agree.

Any updates from the OP?

That update was scary to read..I wouldn't let that Amazon near any of my animals..she's in a very tough spot..hope the little bird is doing ok

Just to update everyone, I have posted more details on the AMAZONS area - "Afraid of my Amazon" and have Dilly's status there. In short, she's doing OK and I think the Amazon did it. Thank you all for your comments! I was totally in shock! And I continue to run through the events on Sunday trying to figure out what happened, why, and why I did not see evidence of attack. Please see the other comments on the AMAZON threads.
