Help! Non tamed ekkie

Hello,
Okay So I have a 1 year old, male Eclectus parrot named Spartan who has not been hand reared. I have never had an already matured bird that has not been hand reared so this is all a bit new and challenging for me. I know it will take much more time and patience and be more difficult than a hand reard bird and so I was hoping someone may have some experience and could tell me how exactly I should go about taming him. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I just want him to know he can trust me and is in a good home. I would also like to know about letting him out of his cage, I have only let him out once and the only way I could get him back in was to pick him up and put him in myself Which he was not too happy about. Should I just keep him in his cage until he is tame or is letting him out important for him and his training? He is settled in and is mostly used to me being around, he is usually fine with me changing out his food and water and what not but is still quite weary if I get too close. So how can I gain his trust and tame him?

Actually "taming" any bird is the same, handraised or not.
(Congrats on getting this one btw.)

It's about gaining the birds trust and keep a very sharp eye out for their comfort-levels.
Most people only stop pushing a birds buttons till it bites, but usually there are a zillion other signals first where the bird tries to tell the human "hey, this is not okay for me".

Male ekkies are supposed to be mellow etc. anyway and since you already have birdexperience it will probably work out just fine

Read the stickies about "gaining trust" and try to do "Clickertraining" (that you both can do while the bird is still in the cage- and that way you can communicate without getting hands/beak on).

Just take your time and let the bird set the pace.

1.) Figure out what his favorite foods are - then use those as training treats

2.) Look into target training

3.) Not necessary to take him out of his cage *right now* in order to tame him, in fact it has the potential to set back any trust you may gain with him if you can't get him back into his cage without capturing him and physically putting him back in.

3.5) Use treats!!!!

4.) Any time you walk by his cage, drop a treat into a special treat cup! No need to stop and watch him eat it, simply drop and go! This will help him look forward to your presence!
