Help! My Bird WAS Acting Like It Was Choking!

I love my bird her name is Fern a canary white winged parakeet But today she acted like she was choking this happened for 1-2mins Before she stopped shes now playing grooming etc, She has not visited the vet yet thought, I got 3 weeks ago I'm very worried that she might be choking are was choking please help I love her so much!!

It is rare for a bird to choke unless it is drowned in too much shower / bath water. If it looks like she is opening and closing her mouth, she could be adjusting her crop. It looks sort of like a yawn with abit of neck motion. A choking bird will Lean forward from what I've read. Crop adjusting is normal, and happens after meals sometimes, they just move their food around for easier digestion.

More description of what Fern was doing, please, so the experts here can give you an idea of what is happening. A Certified Avian Vet visit is always advised if you are concerned about your parrot. If Fern's never been to one, its a good idea to go so you have a base line on all her vital signs in case she gets really sick. The vet can compare signs.

I used to have a yellow canary wing parrot, similar to yours. They are great little parrots, who think they are the size of a macaw!

As stated above, likely Crop adjustment!

Each species tend to have variations on what it may look like. The mid to larger Parrots it looks more like a long Yawn with some head bobbing. With smaller Parrots it will be more of a bobbing /Yawn action.

Regardless of the size of the Parrot, to a first timer, it can look much like choking, since one would not have anything else to compare it.

Seeing an Avian Vet and getting a new Parrot examination is always a good idea! As stated above, having a bench mark for your Parrot will be of great help when comparing year to year or, should you be rushing to your Avian Vet with a very sick Parrot.

I kind of agree with bigfellasdad...regurgitation looks a lot like a conniption fit or choking.

Welcome to the forums! I hope we are able to assist you with Fern's frightening display. Has she since completely recovered with no obvious ill effect?

How is she now? Agree with the above about crop adjusting. And some birds display their affection by regurgitating for you. In my case with Baby after cuddling he will try...but nothing comes out!

Just to add, if Enzo regurjitates her breath is very sweet as opposed to her usual slight garlic breath which is not to pleasant!
