Parrots
Cockatiel, Green cheek Conure, Albino ringneck dove
Hello everyone!
I have a green cheeked conure. He is about 6 months old. Ive had him for over a month now. He sits on my shoulder and hangs out there but when I try to take him out of his cage he clings on for dear life. I don't know what to do. I surely don't want to drag him out. Is there any real way to get him out of the cage? He is friendly, and quite. Another thing is that he likes to hide underneath our couches is that normal or is he trying to get away? I take him out of his cage (when hes not clinging on for dear life) and have him sit on my shoulder for at least an hour. Is there anything else I can do to get his trust? Please anyone help :green2:

My GCC wants so much to come out of this cage all the time. I suggest you leave the door to the cage open and let him come out on his own. They are cuddly birds. Do you have a stand he can get to instead of your shoulder. It would make coming out of the cage interesting. Be patient with him, he is a very young bird an can be afraid of that scary world outside of the cage. Please do not put your hands inside the cage when he is inside as you could be fostering cage possessiveness.

I have a short perch attached to the door of my guys cage. So I coax him down to the perch, then open the door while he is on it and get him to step up onto me from there. If he doesn't want to I leave him be, but 99% of the time this works.

We are having a few issues here ourselves, as Winkee wants to come out, but is very territorial of his cage and hates when you put your hand in there to try to get him most of the time. Its like he wants to come out, but doesn't know how if that makes sense?! Something we are working on.

Kiwi, literally would never come out of the cage at this point. I found that several times if I offer her a bowl of seeds (she only get them when she is out of cage as a treat) then she will step up on the bowl. Once out of the cage I can get her to step up onto my finger. I cannot however get her out of the cage with my hand. In fact so many times she steps on the bowl and as I am taking her out of the cage, a look comes over her for just a moment like "what, what is going on here, how did I get on this bowl??" I find birds so fascinating for all of these reasons. You really have to keep on your toes with them!!

Hi! I have the same trouble with my Holly. I open the cage door and let her come out in her own good time. If I reach in there even to simply pet her I'll get a moderate pinch for my effort. Once she's out shes a cuddle baby. I've been learning she's moody and figuring out ways to minimize it. The treats as incentive has been working. If I reach in her cage I offer her a treat to keep from getting pinched. I discovered today she loves unshelled green beans.
