HELP! Is his beak normal?!

The small circular part which you see at top below his nose is an injury from before he came to us. We got him to the Vet and he thinks it may be an injury from a bird fight. The injury is gone now but the mark is still there.
What I’m worried about is the middle white line you see. Max grinds his beak over everything. Is he scraping his beak too much?!

My CAV is on vacation at the moment and I don’t have any other vets near by. Any help would be appreciated.

Max has been with us for 3 months now. I don’t know how I didn’t notice this before. (He always stays away from us because he is scared but was in a good mood tonight).

I don't know it kind of looks like a hole through the beak in that picture. If his beak was injured it may not grow back normally. If he is rubbing it in line with that old injury I would worry this is because there is an infection under there and it is bothering him... I would think the injury and this are related in some way, either abnormal growth from it or rubbing it because it hurts itches from infection... Did the vet see the beak like this when you last had him there?

I know it looks like a hole but there isn’t one! The injury part is a bit blurry because of my phone making it look like a hole...It’s more like a black surface there now where the injury was. It’ll be this way forever...I think since beaks don’t grow back normally. I’ve tried so many times to take pictures but Max doesn’t sit still for even a single second.
Yes, he did. He wasn’t scraping back then. Vet said it had healed on his own (Max had this injury way before he came to us, probably from when he was in the wild. He was caught by someone and sold to a family who did not take care of him. We found out about him and took him in. He cannot be released back to the wild).

Rubbing beaks is normal...untill it is not normal anymore: too much rubbing could very well be him tellig you there is something wrong underneath.

You know Max best- did the hole get less deep over time or worse?

To me it sort of resembles a finger-/toenail with fungus- you also get that discoulored, streaky growth and a damaged, irritated base (nailbed/ beakbed?)
If it is not infected in any way- maybe do the same thing they do with nails that grow wrong- get a filler up there so it can grow back naturally in time.

Hard to tell anything from these pics, so a visit to a genuineCAV is required. I thnk he can wait until next week, but do have it looked at.

Hi, glad is nit a hole. What I tried to say but failed.. is even though this is an old injury from before you had him, something like dirt, or some type of infection could have been left behind in the wound. Then it healed shut, now the infection (if that's what it is) has been slow brewing, and now is bothering him, either because it is painful, or itches, so now he is scraping rubbing it. Sometimes with puncture wounds, months after they have healed on top infection has been slowly growing underneath. Or even tho healed on top, it my have improperly healed inside leaving a small opening inside that a new infection a fungus it bacteria started to grow inside..that would be my best guess. Because even avery tiny opening inside like the size of a needle head could meet infection in....the two things seemed to be linked. I do hope you can visit the vet again.. best wishes for your bird

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, I don’t know why I didn’t notice it any sooner. My Vet will get back next week so I’ll have Max checked out. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.

Please do...Their beaks are absolutely loaded with blood vessels and nerves, and the higher up the more there are. So it's likely that he's got either some type of infection underneath his beak, or some nerve damage or swelling that is pushing on the nerves, causing him pain. That could likely be the reason that he's been scraping his beak so much...As already stated, scraping their beaks is normal until it isn't, and this isn't normal. He's obviously over-scraping his beak due to either pain, itching, swelling, etc., and if he has an infection in his beak it's very serious because of how close it is to his eyes, ears/sinuses, and of course, his brain.

Has he had Baseline blood-work done since you brought him home? He should be getting a complete Wellness Exam with his CAV at least once a year, and it should include at least Fecal Cultures and routine blood-work. If he's not yet had the first "Baseline" blood-work done, now is the time to do it, when your CAV gets back, because not only will it show how is overall-health is, such as kidney function, liver function, any anemia, nutritional deficiencies, etc., but right now it will also show whether or not he is suffering from any type of infection; if the CBC shows infection, then they know to start with his beak...
