Hello everyone,

Pipa tends to get too excited when she's allowed out of her cage, so she trips and tramples over herself, which sometimes means she lands on her beak. She's never had any injury or any bleeding.

I came home from being out 3-4 hours, and just noticed she has what looks like a pink/red hematoma on the white of her eye. She's acting fine, eating fine, socializing fine, etc.

Is this something I should be taking her in for?

Here's the best I could do, photo-wise:

I have seen this happen in both clumsy baby greys and macaws as long as the bruising is just in that skin around the eye it should heal fine. As long as the eye itself doesn't seem harmed or damaged I would just watch it. If the eye is watering or seems off in anyway then I would recommend a trip to the vet.

I've noticed with conures, that those things can happen, especially with certain, richly colored foods. Mine was nuts about carrots and beets and developed a spot like that for a while, then went away after a while. If she's acting normal, them there's no need for concern. Those spots can develop (temporarily) on the eye-ring with lots of veggies with beta-carotene, among other things.

I wish I could say it was due to veggies, but she won't eat any, just fruits.

She did scare me today -- she flew off into a part of the backyard that was hard to access and landed on a small pine tree. She did not have this hematoma after I was able to grab her safely, but once I came home, about 5-6 hours after the fact, she did have it. I wonder if maybe she landed badly and hurt her eye...I will keep a close watch on her, though.
