A few minutes ago, after washing my hands of course, I quickly inspected my two Green Cheek Conure chicks while the parents were out of the nest box. The larger chick (5 days old) has a large abdomen and a black area under the skin. Is something wrong with the chick? Is there something I should do?

can you get a picture? Call a certified avian vet at the very least if you can.

Yup, CAV for a diagnoses *now* if you can.
(No idea where you are, it is 23:15 overhere)
I do not think there is anything you can do.
(Just let them be where they are and stay calm)

It could be an ordinairy bruise (clumsy parent perhaps) or something fare more serious. So you need an 'eyes on' expert for that.

Get a picture for me, it could be normal or normal but dehydrated. Picture please next to the other baby for comparison.

Any update on this? As SilverSage said, you can't tell without a photo whether it's normal coloring, just a bit dehydrated, or something lethal like internal bleeding or a blockage of some kind...I'm assuming it didn't end well if the OP never came back???

That’s what I’m assuming :(

I was hoping for a follow-up, it always makes me sad when people come in yelling for help and *never* check back in again.

Not only is there probably a tragedy going on and we cannot do anthing (else) to try and help (or just be there for the OP), but also...there is no way anyone else can benefit from the hard lesson learned (or not).

We all lose.

So true, many folks research issues and stumble across this and other forums seeking advice. OP states hatching occurred 3-16, so chick in question was about 6 days old. http://www.parrotforums.com/breeding-raising-parrots/79755-green-cheeked-conure-hatch-time.html

Hopefully all is well, but we may never know. :(

Ok I can't believe I didn't do a follow up, I totally forgot! The chick seemed to be constipated, so I rubbed some previously boiled luke warm water over its vent and hoped that it would poop. It did, but after further investigation, the chick wasn't necessarily much larger than normal. I put the chick back with the parents, and it has been doing fine ever since.
