I have an African Grey Timneh, 6, and a 3 year old male Eclectus
Hello to all,
We have two parrots, a 6 year old Timneh African Grey an a 3 year old male eclectus. The two are not the best of friends...they are both territorial and bicker, but cry for each other if they are not in the same room.
I joined this forum to ask for some advice about our eclectus. He has been a happy, contended bird his whole life, but just in the last few weeks he has plucked out all of his neck feathers. He does it even while he is out of his cage spending time with the family. We are not sure if it is a behaviour/boredom problem or if it is the winter dry air maig him itchy. Nothing has been introduced to his environment, and no family member has been at any pet stores oraround any other birds.
Any suggestions - we are worrid about or little one!?

to the forum!

What type of diet is he on? Does he get for the most part veggis and fruits? Your Eclectus is in need of a different diet then your grey.

BTW I have a 4 yr old TAG dna Male and a 6 month old male eclectus

Mine don't really get along either. Tobi my eclectus has the dominant personality already. I am trying to work on them at least tolerating each other but they need constant supervision.

But I did hear Echo say Tobi for the first time today!

Definitely take him to the vet. I have a happy, young, healthy green cheek conure that has started to take off his feathers (he doesn't pull them out, just sort of clips them off). The vet helped to confirm that he was in good health and that we were doing a lot of things right and then suggested that perhaps our bird was going through a hormonal period and is likely somewhat frustrated. She suggested we try some behavior things (such as head scratches only, no tunneling games, no nesting material, different site for the sleep cage each night etc) and some diet things (no fruit except berries twice/week, a different brand of pellets) in order to bring down the hormonal levels and hopefully also the plucking/chewing. We are hopeful that this will work but we would not have known that this was what we should try without the vet's help and direction (I had already started trying some different things but they weren't helping). Take him in as soon as you can to help prevent it from becoming a habit. Good luck!

Getting Vet checked is definitely a good idea. You may want to check out this link. My eclectus Willie has bald neck, butt, and legs. I am hoping that he's going to grow out of it soon. We are boosting up his nutrients with proteins and calcium.
