Hello. My name is Bill. We have two African Greys. A female which we've had for about 3 years and a male which we bought about 6-7 months ago. They are both around 5 years old. Until 2 weeks ago we've kept them in separate cages but allowed them out together on a stand from time to time. Absolutely no reaction or interest is shown by either to the other. We recently put them into the same cage to see if they would become friends but still there has no interaction between them. Our female talks- always has- but the male does not talk much -never has, so there's been no change in this respect. They do get a bit jealous of each other when we talk to them individually. They seem to each have 'adopted' one side of the cage as their own territory and neither are happy if the other intrudes. They have not actually bitten each other although the threat is there and there has been the odd lunge with the beak. This applies to both. They both feed well from the same dishes, but only very occasionally at the same time. Should we persevere with them in the same cage in the hope that a friendship will develop or would they be happier back in their own cages again? Any advice would be most welcome. Many thanks.

Hello and welcome, Bill! Glad you joined us. You didn't say why you wanted to put them in the same cage? Are you hoping for a breeding pair? If not, they would both probably be happier with separate cages. I think most parrots appreciate having a cage of their own. If you intend to get into breeding, I'm sure some of our other members can give you some helpful advice.

What are your bird's names? We'd love to see photos.

Welcome Bill and your fid's

My suggestion would be to keep them in separate cages, as they have had it that way most of their lives.

Not sure about your set up with the cages. If possible place the empty cage in between the two occupied one.
Place toys, food and water in the empty cage.
In time one or maybe both birds may wonder into the empty cage.

Perhaps they might enjoy spending time together even for a small a amount of time and prefer sleeping in their individual cage.

Let them be the decider and what ever they choose so be it.

Would love to see some pic'
