- 2 moustached parakeets, 2 Sun conures, 20 cockatiels, 11 English budgies
Hi. I'm from SW florida and have had a few parakeets here and there over the years. My daughter always wanted a parrot and my husband was not opposed to the idea So while not really looking for a parrot (expense) I was checking out ads on facebook for a local garage sale group and found Skipper, the mustached parakeet.
He joined our family and we instantly fell in love. He had not been handled much but he did say his name and a few other things which we think are a beeping alarm clock and multiple tree frogs going waggga ruggaa. He was in a tiny cage and since then he's learned to be handled without biting (much or hard) and he's got a much nicer cage and lots of perches on the coffee table. He's 2 and I'm guessing just reaching puberty or maturity since he's been doing a lot of pole dancing and romancing the rope over the last few months.
Next we added Skitzo
I found her in petco, after having given up hope of finding the perfect parakeet buddy. I wanted a male but when I seen her I knew she was my parakeet. She was the smallest and was bullying the others and then she was bouncing around and just generally going nuts. She's fallen in love with skipper although he doesn't care much for her. When she sees him out of his cage sitting on the gym she goes bonkers until we open her door or take her over to him. She will just sit and watch him after that, she's learned not to get too close. Her wings were clipped when I bought her and haven't fully grown out yet. So she will glide to the floor and run across to the ladder and climb up to the table to be with skipper. She has no desire to be anywhere else. I've even found her in his cage before sitting across from him with no idea how she managed to get in there.
So my husband then wants his own bird. He said skipper didn't like him and he hates parakeets
After much research and careful thought we decided on a baby sun conure. He wanted a buddy who he could cuddle with and one without bad habits already formed.
So sunny joined our flock. He/It is about 8 weeks old and not fully weaned yet. He had his first flight yesterday to my daughter, it was a very short flight but he was determined to get to her. Sunny is unsexed but I call him a boy. He's learning to perch and was on the gym with skipper and suddenly skipper showed interest! And skips eyes didn't do his woo woo thing like when he's upset. He just walked over to sunny and started pulling the sheaths off his feathers. We were all sitting there with our jaws on the floor, we thought skipper would never like another bird. He's pictured with Skipper above.
So now Skipper has his buddy Sunny and Skitzo is all alone. I started searching for a English budgie to go with her and found Gris on Craigslist. I wasn't sure he was English or normal parakeet but I loved him on sight.
I think he is 100% English budgie. The person I bought him from had gotten 3 of them from an auction of some sort. She kept one, gave one to her friend and sold Gris to me. He was in a horrible little travel cage with a sandpaper floor and nothing to eat and no perches Although I thought he was a older bird from her picture turns out he's very young, so young he still stretching his wings out. He's mostly tame as if he was hand fed, hasn't bitten anyone but doesn't like being away from Skitzo. She crys now when I take him out to play and she's alone, so she will jump out and run for skipper. He's a bit bigger than she is and his eyes always look sleepy. Not sure what color he is, he photographs blue/grey but when holding him he appears to almost not have any breast color. He's beautiful and plays with toys like I have never seen a normal parakeet do.
So anyway, That's my flock and I thank you very much for allowing me to tell their stories
