Adam-my umbrella cockatoo Dreamer-my wifes B&G macaw
i'm the proud Daddy to Adam my rescued umbrella cockatoo, kinda a newbi as a owner but have done my home work. Adam seen to that as when i got him he had not been out of his cage in about four years, was fed wild bird seed and had staggnet water and lived in a green house with several other birds in mo. of all places. found out that he came from people who thought it was cool for him to smoke and genneraly abused in many ways. we are currently dealing with fear and cage agression and dealing with a upper respitory infection caused by his old diet so now we are working on eating zupreem as orderd by his vet and taking shots for ten day's what a chore. but over all we stand together as the photo shows been alot of bad bites resulting from his problems but i love him. by the way we rescued a B&G macaw from the same place and sad to say there was two other umbrellas there that did not make it, i was trying to get them as well just couldnt come up with the money fast enough to save them so this is kinda dedacated in there memory that the two who got out are doing better all the time.

Hi Daddy and welcome on board.
Thank you for giving Adam a second chance, he deserves it, and a Daddy like you !!!!!!!!
So happy that Adam has been removed from that disgusting place he was living in.
It's going to take time, for him to trust again, be patient, shower him with lots of love, attention and kindness,
Not to be taken out a cage, FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS !!!!! SO CRUEL.
Try leaving Adam, in the cage, with the door open. If he comes out, that's great.
If not, offer him a treat through the bars, talking to him gently.
Keep doing what you doing I think it's wonderful.
You will be rewarded abundantly, for all your time, love and patience.
You did what you could, wish we could save all the birds..........
Keep us posted.....
Take care

Welcome, Sad to hear about the others, but great to hear that you could help Adam.

Interestingly birds that are so neglected/abused for so long, while they have many problems, once they are in a caring healthy home they often warm up quickly and are very grateful.

Hi, I am new here too. Our family also rescued an Umbrella Cockatoo about 2 mos. ago. He is around 7 yrs. old and doing pretty well with us. We also have a b&g macaw baby...still being hand fed. They are VERY different but we love them both...UNCONDITIONALLY..strong words in the bird world but truly the only way. Has yours started to be vocal yet?? Ours loves to shred paper balls and will now play fetch, however this can become an agressive game if I don't throw the ball fast enough for him. Best of luck to you, I hope his resp. problem clears up, ours had one too and was on antibiotics for 10 days but he is better now. Best of luck.ktbug

day one i turned adam lose as soon as we got home. he rode around on my arm and shoulder for hours. for the first couple months he was here he would act up with my wife, daughter, and female friends but never be more than a cuddle bug with me even lay on his side not quite on his back vet said he thinks it may be due to him being sick so we ride out the storm even though he can bite hard. lol got to love him.

Hi Daddy
Sounds like Adam is testing you. Just the way children do.
You doing great, ignoring him when he bites.
If he persists on biting, give him "time out".
Place him back in his cage, cover it and walk away.
Usually they become quiet, waiting for you.
After a while take him out.
Eventually he will associated "time out" if he has done wrong.
Sure this phase will pass.
SO CORRECT WE LOVE THEM NO MATTER WHAT
Keep us posted.
Take care
