Hi. This is my first time on the forum. I have a female parrotlet and I am adopting a 17 year old Congo African Grey. He has been neglected for 2 years and I am taking him in to hopefully give him a happy home. He was very calm with us when we seen him but he would not let us touch him.
I am hoping to find some helpful information here. I will be bringing him home on Sunday. I made an appt for him to see a vet. He speaks very well but the biggest problem is that he has not been handled much or out of his cage much in almost 2 years. He also is plucking but that may just be from boredom and he is stress from being lonely. Any advice is welcome. :)

I can't offer advice but there are a lot of grey owners out there and lots of large parrot owners with tons of experience that I am sure will be along to help. Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new to be new birdy:)

That is neat. I am so willing to learn all I can. I can not wait to go get him. I hate that I have to wait another couple days.
I see you are from Omaha?! I am 45 miles north of Omaha. But I am getting my CAG in a small town outside of Omaha.

I actually live in the country in Cass county....I joined this forum from work so I think my location is based off that...but shhhhhh don't tell anyone. I honestly wish you the best of luck and lotsa patience. The rewards is not as immediate as if it were a baby and you controlled their experiences but sometimes when I see a break through with either of my babies it is almost more prideful because I had to work just as hard as they did and when we accomplish something I know Lola or JJ get one step closer to trusting me an dfeeling that they are in a loving forever home...finally! I can't wait to see your pictures!

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

When he is home, just sit near his cage, talk softly to him. When he is used to you, open the cage door, let him look around, he may not come out the first day or two.

And clicker and target training would be good choice. There are lots of target training video on YouTube that you can have a look at.

And website like birdtricks and goodbirdinc would have some good advice too.

Hope this helped. :)

Welcome
Congrats for adopting "high five"

Let us know how is goes when he arrives, how he settles down etc
Many Grey guardian on the forum, who would love to assist whenever possible

Enjoy the forum

Welcome to the forum, there's plenty of information off this forum to help you with anything you need!!! :)

Very good advise from the others. Be patient with him and let him come to you. They are usually very social birds and like the family activities going on around them. But everything is new to him and he will be very scared for awhile.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. We ended up getting our adopted CAG a few days early. He is adapting well. He is 17 years old. Name is Mufasa. He has been cage bound for 2 years after his owner died. He has come a long ways in 4 days. Yesterday he came out of his cage 2 times! One of those times he was out for 3 hours just hanging out on the top play area on the cage. He sees the vet Thurs. He won't let us handle him yet but I did get him to step up onto a perch I was holding. :) He is great.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new addition.

Mufasa is a very unusual Name.

Do you have any pics of him yet?

I have a video we made of him singing. Not the best picture because we had the ipad on the back of the cage but you can hear him. :)
