Hi all! I am very excited as (assuming all goes well) I am a soon-to-be momma of a Meyer's Parrot named Nacho.
Little bit about me: My grandparents owned an aviary and bred lovebirds and then English Budgies. As a child I loved helping clean cages, with feedings, checking nest boxes, banding babies, all of it! I had a pet Budgie named Sunday and also took care of my great-grandmother's 2 talented cockatiels after she passed away. It's been many years since I've owned a parrot. Now that I'm done with college, own my own home, and am settled I am eager to rekindle my passion for parrots. I've been researching for months and decided on the Poicephalus species.
About Nacho: Current owners are trying to downsize their flock of 5 and have mostly larger parrots. Nacho is of unknown sex, approximately 2 years old. S/he is in good health, besides missing a toenail which the current owners only noticed after they brought him/her home (earlier this year). Here is the only picture I've seen so far. I can't see a leg band in this photo (could be hidden).
I'd love all of your opinions regarding what I should ask/do before agreeing to buy. Obviously I am going to introduce myself to Nacho to see how s/he takes to me. Any tips here?
I also want to ask some more questions to the current owners. So far I've asked about temperament, behaviors, diet, wings trimmed (answer was Nacho doesn't fly, does flutter to the ground, but they have not trimmed since they got him/her in March). I still need to ask if they've taken Nacho to an avian vet (my guess is no, as they said they have not done any grooming and did not bother to have him/her sexed).
Any other suggestions/advice? They are asking $220 for Nacho, which I think is a good deal considering breeders ask around $400 and local pet stores ask much more $600-$700.
Barring some really shocking new information, I think I will be this fid's proud new momma!
