I am really glad that I found this site! I have a new 6 month baby black cap conure -named Dolce. I don't know if it is male or female - decided female would be better if she starts to lay eggs in a couple of years. If she never lays eggs -I'm still safe! Does anyone know how to tell male from female besides DNA? I read somewhere that there may be a difference in the white around their eyes, eye color (red or black) and the size of their hips. Since I do not have anything to compare her hips with.......I don't know.

I was looking for info on some of her habits - when I talk to her when she is in her cage, she starts rocking up and forward and back (adorable!) what does this mean?

Thanks in advance for any responses - Sherri :) :green2:

DNA and SS (Surgical Sexing) are the most reliable methods. It's possible to get a false test/reading, but it's highly more accurate than any other method out there! Except of course, if your bird lays an egg!

The behavior you describe sounds like typical conure behavior! I've had a conure in my life since 2001. I've only had two, and of those two, I only have one remaining. Of these two conures, even though they are very similar in appearances, they were the complete opposite! Behaviors, likes, dislikes, health.... there's still a lot of things I don't get about conures! But I still love em!
