two red headed conures
Just yesterday I bought two red headed conures from a co-worker of my husband's. When we went to go and see them, they were very curious about us and I managed to get close enough to them for them to "check me out", I received lots of hair preening and they even tried to figure out how to seperate the lines on my shirt... which don't come off, but was cute. The guy who owned them, had had them for around three months and said they were too much of a handful since he got a new bird, which is an African Grey. I had a sun conure before that was the love of my life, so super sweet and died suddenly a few years back. Anyway, since I had experience with birds, he felt comfortable with me taking them off his hands. Right away I noticed some of the reason why they may have become handfuls for him, and that is that their cage was basically just a cage... only a wooden perch running across it with a food and water bowl. No toys, no playground... nothing. They at least had themselves for companionship. He thinks they are eleven months old, but doesn't know. He said that they were a boy/girl pair... but being that they weren't blood tested, I'm not sure why he thinks that other than one is slightly larger than the other. He showed us this big leather glove he uses to handle them, and showed us how... by putting the glove on and grabbing them on the back. ...<sigh>... I am fearful that it's going to take awhile to gain their trust enough to handle them. They rode in the car very well on the way back, which was an hour drive. Today they have been super quiet and huddled together.

I, fortunately, have lots of time on my hands with which to bond with them. I am new to this country and am enjoying life here in exotic Dubai. I am happy to add to my family... now to find the perfect names!

Thanks for listening, I am looking forward to getting to know everyone!!

i am certain it will go well for you :) there prob quiet because of new surroundings etc

welcome to the forum :) and send in some pics of the birds, i'm new to all this parrot lark myself :) but i love to pop in an read posts and up dates and waffle on about my nut! i wont offer names for your birds lol as you can see i tend to name as i see, and angel, my brothers name for her didnt fit! she's a nutty bird, so i just call her nut, my partner and son call her angel still, no confusion, she answers to who has the best treat lol

Congrats on the adoption and welcome to the forums. It sounds to me like the birds were getting neglected if the previous owner claimed they were a handful and used to a glove to handle them. It sounds to me like he had intentions of breeding them and weren't really interested in them being pets. It's always easier working with one bird than two. I have seen very tamed birds become aggressive when a second bird is introduced into their habitat. This may be the case here. Good luck, you will need it.

When I first started with birds. I adopted two that were breeders. Very wild!!! I tried the gloves cause I was afraid of getting bit. But it only freaks them out even more. I started with perch training, that was a better method. No one gets hurt! Welcome to the forum!

Yes, where are you originally from? And why did you move to Dubai? I know that is off topic, but it intrigues me. I lived in Japan for three and a half years and Guatemala for a short time period. I love being over seas. The conures should be fine with a little work. Good luck.

Thank you all so very much for the warm welcome!! I means a lot to me!!!

I moved to Dubai from the Tennesse in the US. We have lived all over the US, so I am not orginally from TN. My husband is affiliated with the military and basically does the same job as a civilian that he did as an active duty member. He now teaches for the military and he got a job offer to do so here. We have always wanted to see the world, to offer our kids a better education and to live somewhere exotic and beautiful! Eventually I would love to live in Italy and try my hand at owning a vineyard, but that's a LONG way away! And probably more of a pipe dream than reality, but one can have big dreams right? I highly recommend a visit to Dubai if anyone gets a chance to come.

The birds are so cute, they love on each other and preen each other a lot. One of them is more outgoing than the other and I think that one will be the one that lets me handle it first. Anytime it starts getting close to the side of the cage and fluffing up as I tell it how beautiful it is the other one will distract it. LOL
