My Hahn's Macaw Bella <3
Hi everyone! I'm new to the site and just wanted to give everybody a chance to get to know me. I've always grown up with birds, I grew up having a Cockatiel and then a Green Cheek Conure. Both passed away a few years ago and I finally decided in November that I was ready to be a birdy mommy again. The 2nd week of November I happened to be at Omar's Exotic Birds when I absolutely fell in love with this Hahn's Macaw. She is as sweet as pie. I still live at home so after talking to my parents about it I put a deposit down on her and got her later that week [Nov 13]. During the first week or two that I had her she was trying to talk but couldn't quite get the words out. On Nov 23 I left for Thanksgiving vacation and I got picked her up on Nov 29. I boarded her at Omar's Exotic Birds during that week and she came home talking! My boyfriend & I went to to pick her up and she said "Hello!" and I brushed it off thinking it was one of the many other birds there. Then I put my hand in her cage while we were putting her into her carrier to go home and she said "Hi!".... THEN when I was trying to pull her out of my hair to have her groomed she said "Step up!". I was such a proud momma that I actually almost cried in the store. We got her home and I didn't hear her talk much [she coincidentally only talked when my boyfriend was there]. Then Tuesday I was giving her a bath and she saw her reflection in the mirror & said "Hello!" thinking it was her friend. Yesterday while I was at church my parents heard her chattering away in her cage saying "step up" "hello" "hi" and was trying to eek out the words "bye". I am so impressed with how fast her vocabulary is growing!!! I couldn't be more proud of Bella! I absolutely adore her and can not wait for what the future holds for us! My boyfriend really didn't grow up with birds that much and he has fallen head over heels for our little baby Bella! We have talked about getting a few more birds once we are married. I can't wait :D :green2:

Once I get home I'm going to upload some. I'm working as a nanny right now so hopefully pics will be up tomorrow :D

Hello Moma,
I just adopted a Hahns this past Saturday! He was slightly abused in his previous home from what I understand. We've made good progress so far this week. Hopefully in time I will earn his trust.
I too love the Hahns! They are incredibly smart, beautiful and fun to watch. Glad to hear yours is talking. Gives me hope. My little guy is only 5mos, so I think in time he'll start talking. He's trying already.
Welcome to the forum. I am new here as well. Look forward to keeping in touch with you, kinda compare notes on our Hahns.

TimL: Congratulations on the adoption! They are so much fun to have around. I enjoy the cuddle time I get with Bella on the couch while she eats her warm meal. What diet is your Hahn's on?

@MellyKyitus: When I took Bella to her initial vet exam I opted to have her DNA tested so I can say "she" and not feel bad! Who knows how I would have switched to saying "he" if it were a boy! Your B & G is absolutely gorgeous. The boyfriend and I have talked about getting a B & G once we are married :)

Momma, you definitely going to enjoy this forum.
Browse around, so much to read, learn and share with one another.

So exciting when a bird begins to talk, it's like listening to a child. AND that child never ever grows up LoL.

Have fun and enjoy the forum

Momma, welcome to the forum
Browse around, much info available, and so much to share with one another.

So exciting when a bird start talking, just like when a child begins to talk.
You must record the bird talking now, keep it and play it a later stage. You will then hear how much the birds talking ability has improved.
Enjoy the forum and have fun

Thanks Antoinette :)
Tonight Bella put herself to bed. She usually goes to bed at 7 and I got home a few minutes late [7:05] and she was in her tent and when I went to put her to bed she was trying to say good night. Absolutely cutest thing ever! I adore the way she tries so hard to talk! And her squeaky baby voice & "i'm exhausted" baby cry are cute!
