I am a proud owner of 2 budgies , a ringneck and several finches. Now I am here basically for my ringneck My neighbor bought an indian ringneck baby and as they were unable to take care of it So they have handed him over to me as I am a parent of 2 budgies and several finches. I have hand raised both my budgies successfully but never had a ringneck before. His images are given below. Now the problem is What is his age?? Secondly is he ready for weaning phase??? , I have been feeding him parrot baby formula for two days at first he was very scared and was running towards far corners of the room I have to catch him and a type of force feed him. He was not speaking also. But now he is being responsive) speaking and now is accepting feed but with little fear. But he is still scared from me( but little less from day 1). He is healthy as I can say from droppings and his crop is also emptying. He is only scared or as he can be in his weaning phase in which it is normal to reject baby formula??Should he be given water seperate from formula? Plz tell any tips for caring him will be highly appreciable

First, welcome to Parrot Forums! Thank-you, for joining and taking this young Ringneck into your home.

Yes, you have a young Ringneck and will likely be feeding it formula for a while. I am not experienced with very young Parrots, so I am not going to say how long.

The reaction of the Parrot to you is not uncommon. Remember that this young Parrot has been taken from its Parents, provided to someone who does not have your skills and had now ended up in your home. So, your Baby needs a little time to adjust to his /her unstable World. As additional time passes, your Baby will become more comfortable with you.

Others will likely come on and provide more specific information, but this should at least bring you some comfort and a small bit of direction.

Again, welcome to Parrot Forums!

Welcome to the forums, thanks for taking in this beautiful bird!

I too am not experienced with Ringnecks, but it appears nicely feathered and probably at an advanced stage ready for weaning. Other members will be in a better place to give good advice.

It is recommended to quarantine (keep separate) a new bird for at least 30 days to prevent possible disease transmission. I know this is not always possible, just a thought.

Keep offering formula until it is refused. And always keep fresh bowl of pellets, and fresh veggie available. This is like abundance weaning, which is he best way to wean a young parrot. One day the formua will be refused. Every couple of months I offer Salty ,who will be 2 soon, a few spoons of formula.
