Hello everyone, I am not a first time bird owner. When i was a younger kid my folks had budgies and Cockatiels but that was awhile ago. I have always wanted a bird but the time was never right. Now I own a home, have a sound proofed basement and would like to get a bird to take care of, play with and incorporate into the family. I always wanted a Senegal since meeting a sweet one in a non-chain pet store about 10 years ago but I was not ready for the commitment.
Now that I have been married, have a home and a family I feel I am ready to commit to a bird. Myself, my wife and my 4 year old have fallen over the moon with a Jenday at the worst place possible (IMHO) to buy an animal, Petco. I know all about the noise but this bird is crazy...he LOVES every human I have seen it come in contact with. My daughter can pet him and he just nibbles lightly at her finger and will perch on her finger, he is 3 months old. He gives kisses (no saliva contact of course) and will shoulder surf with anyone and lie on his back without any issues... I just feel he/she is a rare bird. I am only worried about the noise. So far every time we have been there, it is the other birds that are loud. The Jenday will squawk a little when you first open the cage but as soon as you do, he is totally enthralled with the humans the whole time. Not sure if this is rare or not.
Anyways before we take the plunge we are going to go over to DJ Feathers Aviary in Chantilly, Va to visit some other birds including Senegals (which I've always loved) to make sure we do due care and diligence in our selection. I am not sure it is prudent to just pick a bird without checking out all options and scenarios possible. I did go to another well known area bird seller (Featherheads in Sterling, VA) that I was not really impressed with, sadly to say (it seems all the birds there seem neglected, dirty and not well taken care of, made me sad but that is a whole other story...) But anyways I am definitely going to be a new bird owner soon! I look forward to interacting with those who can help. I am ready! LOL
