Just thought I would introduce myself and my lil monkey, Yode. I am a new mommy of a 12 wk old Pineapple GCC as of 2 weeks ago. I have been slowly learning about all of the "classic" characteristics that everyone speaks of and hope I can turn this little guy into a good birdie. He is very "attached at the hip" as others have joked about, and loves my head! I have read several blogs on this site about controlling screaming habits and hope I can enforce positive reinforcements while he is young and learning, as I don't want him to turn into a TINY MONSTER!!!!

I wondered when he might grasp using his feet to hold things like foods or toys? Do GCC develop that trait like the bigger parrots? Also, I know that every bird is different, but when do they typically start forming words together?

I would love to hear from any of the GCC folks. So please introduce yourself, as well as your flock(s). :)

Hello! I am also new on the GCC train. I got my Pazu Friday last week, and he's been a joy and a monkey!
Pazu is not only a parrot, he's a monkey, bat, duck, a demon of the southwest wind! He's named after pazuzu, a Babylonian god, he's the lesser evil.

Pazu has an issue being left alone at the moment, attached at the hip is right! He's noisey for a bit, randomly noisey when he's sleepy and so on.

Hi! Welcome, and congrats!
They're so much fun :) My little Kiwiberry is also really attached, hates to be alone. If I'm gone for 5-10 seconds she'll fly around looking for me.
She can't fly very well though, she was clipped as a chick.

Kiwiberry does grab stuff with her feet. I'm not sure when they start forming words, but I was under the impression that they're not great talkers.

Hi and welcome to the GCC club!
I'm the proud Significant Other to a sassy cinnamon male, Teeko.
He's clingy, protective and very talkative!
Teek does hold things with his feet a lot and I'm sure you'll catch Yode doing it soon!

Hello FlyingSolo, congrats on your new arrival. I have no insight since my little poppet only joined the family last week but I can say this... What an incredible little bird!! Hope you'll enjoy learning from others on the forum as much as I do. Love the name, by the way... I think Pazu will suit your little mischief!!!

Welcome FlyingSolo and Yode! You have THE BEST forum for guidance and info for getting you and Yode off to a great start. I, too, am a fairly new parront and the links and advice from everyone has gotten me and Doodle thru some trying situations!

Welcome new GCC friends!
This is a great place to learn all about your birds, their typical "characteristics" and all sorts of other tips and advice! As far as learning to hold things with their feet and speaking that will all come with time.

You can try to offer more toys or food that encourage holding (larger pieces of fruit or climbing/hanging toys).

As far as speaking they'll pick up mostly sounds then some smaller phrases. It's all about repetition. I always say "thank you" after my Kiki politely takes a treat from me - and every now and then she says it back!

Try to also incorporate behaviors with phrases. For example whenever I or Kiki drops something I say "oops!" which is also something she has picked up. This is great for cleaning as Kiki often likes to eat have a grape then toss it xD Now I at least have a chance to find the half eaten treats before I step on them!! haha This is also really helpful for potty training! I know a grey that says "bullseye" whenever he poops. Again great for cleaning!

Can't wait to see pics and hear more about you two!

Hello !My Yellowsided GCC is only about 10 months old and has already started talking and saying some words, he only says his name actually because it's the thing we say around him most, but that's what I would try to do just say his name and little phrases around him, like whatcha doin, good bird etc. because I haven't even tried to start teaching mine words he just picked up on his name.

Teeko says 'Whatcha doin?' his name, 'Pretty bird' 'Yes' 'Whatsup' 'Come 'ere' and 'Gimmie kiss', along with many multi-syllable phrases I haven't yet deciphered. He can imitate a teapot (We often call him the Teekpot :D), a puppy whining and does this little song I made up. He started doing it out of the blue last week, it's adorable.

If your GCC doesn't say much yet, just you wait! It will come!
