I "rescued" my first parrot from PetCo in February. I say rescued because she came in to the store shortly after she was weaned and a family adopted her. They said they had a cage but three days after they bought her they came back and bought a cage. A day after that they brought her back saying something was wrong with her. The store took her to a vet and it was discovered she had a neck injury. It seems to have healed but I strongly suspect they kept her in her travel cage and when she started screaming they shook it. After that she had an understandable mistrust of humans and sat in the pet store for a year.
I fell in love and brought her home just after her first birthday(which coincidentally enough is on the same day as my oldest daughters!) I didn't even try to touch her for the first few days, just fed her dried bits of papaya and talked to her. By two weeks in she was letting me scratch her through the bars and now we're best buds! She still likes to bite first ask questions later, but she is steadily improving in that area.
So glad to have found such an active parrot forum!! Can't wait to pick every one's minds!
