Parrots

I just joined because I need help. I decided to get a parrot about 6 weeks ago.
The first thing I did was to buy a cage. It is 24" x 24" x 60" on a wheel stand.
I bought some perches to furnish it and I am now trying to decide how to populate it. I have all the time in the world to spend with a bird because I am retired.
The bar spacing of the cage is 7/8", so a medium sized parrot would fit nicely.
The first thing I would like to know is "Adult or Baby?"
Second would be "What Species?"
My priorities are intelligence and personality.
Recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi and welcome on board.
Sorry not good at arithmetics LoL Ropes and chains hanging in the cage, keeps them entertained for hours. Bells and small balls are great.
You mentioned adult or baby. Would you like to handread a bird or purchase an older bird, perhaps adopt one. Taking on an older bird is difficult. Yet many people have and are happy with their decision.
Being retired is a great advantage, so much time to bond with the bird, quality time etc. Especially if you are wanting to handrear a bird.
I have had a few African Grey's and one ringneck. Unfortunately the ringneck died due to a stroke, not able to help with any advise there !!!
I have an African Grey now Mishka, 2 years old. Handreared her from 6 weeks.
An African Grey requires lots of love and attention (I work from home) no problems there.
She talks non stop (my chatterbox). Has a lovely personality, does not scream. Each bird has their own personality.
If you are prepared to spend lots of time interacting, showing love and affection, stimulating the bird constantly, you will be amazed with their intelligence.
They are great companions, I could not imagine my life without her.
Read through the posts, so much great info and tips. Some links on different types of birds, which will perhaps assist you, in choosing a bird that will suit you.
Other members will probably tell you about their birds, giving you an idea about different species.
Hope this was helpful info.
Good luck, keep us updated !!!
Take care

Ditto to Antionette's reply. I too have an AG Timneh and had her from a young age. They have such intelligence it is amazing - Games, conversations and just good lovin will be your reward.
I always suggest people research and know all about your bird and the dietary needs which are most important. Please feel free to ask us any questions.

Welcome to this wonderful forum! I also have a CAG. Although I must admit Macaws are my favorite, I do love all my birds. It's great to have a baby and I have found it very rewarding to have an adult. When I started out years ago, I did rescue and adult Military Macaw from a bad situation. Not a really smart choice for me since I really did not have enough experience. There was not a deodorant in the world that worked for me while working with this bird. My first baby was a B&G Macaw, named Papagayo, who will be 10 years old in February. That really helped me learn and over the years assisted me in being able to help other birds, although I'm not finished learning! By doing research on different species of birds and also on age and the issues that will accompany each, you should be able to make an informed decision on which bird will be right for you. Keep us posted, we'd love to hear about your progress!:blue:
