Parrots
Cockatiels and Parakeets
Hi. I am 21 and I still live at home (probably will for quite some time sadly.) I have 2 cockatiels (Chico and Bella) and a parakeet (Bandit). When I was much younger we had an African Grey (Murphy) who was wild caught :)() and not real friendly with anyone other than my dad. I could scratch his head through the cage and give him treats. Sadly, he died a year or so after my dad died. We also had many other parakeets (6 other parakeets) who all died of old age. Bandit is currently 10 years old.

A friend found Chico in her backyard. Nobody claimed him so she gave him to me. He is estimated at 7-8 years old. Bella is about 4 years old.

I am currently in the process of deciding which species I will get next. I have quite a bit of time to decide (and want to make the right choice) because I cannot get another feathered friend until I find a job and save up some money (currently, my mom is paying for the birds. she doesn't like birds but doesn't mind having them if I take care of them and pay for any new additions.)

Welcome to the forum. And have you considered a green cheek conure as your next bird?

Hey! Welcome, there are a few other people on here from MI (like me lol) What part of the state are you from? You'll get loads of help on here! :) I agree with cdog, the next bird I suggest is a GCC. They are a large bird in a lil body, and that's why I love them.

Of the conures, I am considering the sun conure. The biggest issue I see with conures is the noise level. Since I am living with my family, who aren't huge bird lovers, I need to consider them in my decision. However, I have not totally ruled out conures.

Right now I am thinking about: The sun conure, another cockatiel, an african grey, or a macaw (haven't decided on type, leaning towards blue and gold.) However, it is looking more and more like I will probably get another cockatiel (maybe 2 more) because I would like a HUGE cage for the African Grey or Macaw, and we don't have room for that. I'm still considering all species, and probably wont be able to take on a new addition for at least a year.

Yes, your family needs to hear a Sun conure before you get one. The thing with conures also is they tend to vocalize throughout the day. Most of my friends and family think my Nanday is extremely obnoxious, and would not want to live with her. I am a person who is not bothered by noise, like ever, so I deal with her fine.

roxynoodle makes a great point, you'll know better from spending time with a sun conure and other parrots. If you live near the Grand Rapids area, there is a store that has several kinds of parrots you are allowed to interact with. I volunteer there when I can. Send me a message if you're interested! :)

I have a gcc, but i have to suggest a love bird!! i've raised love birds before and mine formed a bond way faster than my conure.
I found love birds to be more loving, more personality too. still, i love santana, nonetheless.

I am a little south of Detroit, so Grand Rapids is out of the question.

In comparison with a conure or cockatiel, how big is a love bird? I have seen them before and always thought they were kinda small (which is okay. I have a parakeet. I am just leaning towards a larger bird... not that a cockatiel or connure is large haha)

Peachface lovebirds are usually about 5-6 inches long, head to tail. the other varieties (masked, fischers, etc) tend to be a bit smaller. A cockatiel is 12-13 inches long, head to tail. But, of course, one does need to keep in mind that 'tiels have very long tails, lovebirds have short tails. They do not, however, have small personalities. Especially the peach faces. They may weigh mere grams, but they don't know it. However, they can actually be quite loud when they want.

If you're looking for a somewhat larger parrot that isn't too noisy, I'd look into pionus or poicephalus parrots.

South of Detroit puts us about an hour apart. I would have to think there is at least one parrot rescue in Detroit that you could spend time at, along with your family where you would get to interact with different birds and figure out which one would best fit into your family.
