Thank you , he's only six months old and really worried if he will recover fully from this. I've had him at the vet twice, they've given him anti-biotics and pain killers. The toy that I bought was suppost to be parrot safe, so when my baby is better, I will be seeing what action I can take against the manufactures, they must have to test these toys or put warnings on them. In a few days when he's abit better I will post some pictures of rio an his injuries and the toy that did this. I can warn other bird owners about the dangers of this toy. My self and partner was at work when this happened, I got a phone call off my 15 year old son to tell me rio was hanging from the top of his cage with the wire off the toy piercing under his beak, and out of his mouth. As I work 10 minutes away, my son had to un screw the toy off the top of the cage while taking the weight of the bird,an get him down. Rio then some how dislodged the toy himself which probably caused more injurys to him. My younger son also watched this and he,s really distressed about it. We are all just really lucky he got found when he did. I just wondered if there's anything else I can do to help him back to health,he's only eating baby food and not really drinking much. I've been giving him lots of cuddles and kisses and reasuring him but he's very distant and making crying noises like he's in pain just feel totally useless. Does any one know if he'll ever be the same again, would hate to think at such young age that this will stay with him forever.

Welcome to the forum, but I wish it was under better circumstances.

Well, Rio has suffered a trauma, and he probably still is in pain. Yes, he will get over it. Remember he can live 70 years so time will heal him physically and emotionally. Just be understanding and kind, and give him time.

Any toy can probably be dangerous, and in the case of a large macaw, there probably isn't much that's entirely bird proof. You just have to keep your eye on things, and realize a macaw can destruct things quickly. I'm glad your son saw him as soon as he did.
