Lookin for a new friend!
:) Hello i have done lots of homework on Greys and have been wanting one for along time. Im no stranger to high mantance pets. I have exotic pets now. snakes and gekos (have had red eyed tree frogs). I was wondering as parrot owners if you can give me any helpful insite.tips. Things to look for when buying or what not to get. Things to expect. Anything will help. thank you. hope to here from you all.

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately I dont have time right now to give you any info. There are many Grey people here who I am sure will see this post and give you info. I will try to when i get a free moment or two.

Again, Welcome!

Hi Betty and welcome to our forum. We have several grey people here. I do understand the love for the greys. First of all let me say there are many out there that need loving homes. Not all birds with rescue org. have issues either. If this appeals to you look at Phoenix Landing and The Gabrial Foundation. Most of the time they will come with the cage too. If you want a young one I suggest a breeder. Mine came from African Queen breeder J. Patterson. She has a long long history of breeding healthy greys. Good for you for doing your homework. Any more ? please ask.

Hi & welcome to a fantastic forum, you've come to the right place. As Dusky mentioned there are a lot of Grey Guardians who will be able to help you with specific needs of Greys, I unfortunately am not one of them. I do however share my home with dogs, cats, snakes and I honestly think my parrot is the most work, but also the most rewarding. They are like having another child and require a lot of care with diet, training, cleaning and interaction. The more interaction they have with you the better.

It's good you've done some homework. Although there are general behavioural traits of each breed it's good to remember they all have thier individual personalities and don't always follow the rule.

As for where to buy from I personally don't like pet shops (I can only judge by what I see in Australia). I prefer to go to a breeder who has the birds interest at heart or if you have a sanctuary in your area it's a great place to rescue a bird in need. Where ever you go ask heaps of questions, request a health guarantee and don't settle if you are not 100% happy with what you are buying - its a VERY long-term commitment.

SB gave some great advice. If possible, start with a rescue organization. However, if that doesn't work out, I'm getting a CAG from a breeder here in the Dallas, TX area and I believe she has some Timneh's on eggs. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you her information. I know she does ship birds, but I don't know what the process is.

Thanks every one! So i was think that the adoption places would look twice at me cause I have snakes. someone told me i might have to keep my bird in a different room as my snakes? What is your guys take on rescue parrots that have trust issues?

I was just at a meeting with a representative of the Gabrial foundation and he was looking for someone to take in a grey they just acquired. The bird had no bad behavior issues at all. Birds with trust issues would take longer to rehab. Many of the birds are in foster homes where they are well cared for and issues get resolved. Snakes - I would never keep snakes in the same room as a grey. They are predator and birdie is the prey. You would have to keep any bird in a different room than the other critters.

Welcome on board, great friendly members, ALWAYS willing to assist.
Fantastic info, from the above members.
Browse around, so much available pertaining to the African Grey.
Happy to hear, you are doing research, best you know, than don't........
I have an AG Mishka, (2 1/2 years old) she has changed my life, in so many different ways. They are comical characters, free entertainment all day.
I would say Mishka requires at least 3 hours of my day, that's including playing, interacting, training and mealtimes.
Below is an awesome link, which would answer many more of your questions.
Any idea, when you will become a guardian?

Anything furthermore, please feel free to ask.

Spiritbird- you are in so far from where i live..how would i get this fantastic animal you speak of? i know some people ship them.

I do not have a bird for you. I have one AG TAG named Rosie. The links I sent you were for a breeder in Fla. She would be the one to talk to and uses hand feeders in many states until babies are ready to go to new home. The other two links are for adoption of a bird. So sorry if I was not clear.

As long as your snakes are in a secured, locked escape-proof terraruim you will be ok. My diamond python has been with me 15years, we've had rabbits, guinea pigs, kittens etc over the years and have never lost one to the snake. I have an open plan house so I have no choice to have all my animals sharing the living area. I never let the snakes out unattended and when they are out everything else is put in one of the bedrooms. Shadows breeder also had snakes just off the bird room without any issues. If there is a remote chance your snakes will get out I wouldn't even have a parrot or any other animal in the house.

Mel: thanks yeah i always say my snakes getting out could be the worst thing for them..lol. i will have to apply to the rescue place here.

How do birds do with shipping? also are they cheaper as babies? cause thats how it is in the snake world.

I can't comment on cost in the US but in Australia the babies are usually more expensive. As for shipping I guess it would depend on the individual bird. I would imagine it would be stressful but moving to a new home is stressful anyway. If you went to a good breeder I'd hope they wouldn't ship a bird that couldn't cope.
