we had 1 blue and gold macaw
To start out we are not on hear for hand outs and not making this up.We lost our blue and gold macaw a month ago and it been so hard on my wife and my 9 year old twins. he was 5 years old and we had him from a baby.He was loved and cared for very much so and the kids played with him every day before school and after school he even helped out with the home work and yes even ate the home work,
they took him into our local vet one morning to get his wings done, beak, and get him sexed . the vet put him under cuz of all the fighting he was putting up with the vet and to do the sex. he did come back out of it they brought him home in a box.
if anyone has one for sale or would like to find a very good home for please let us know if you could help us out please. THIS IS NOT A JOKE THIS HAPPEN FOR REAL . IT BROKE MY KIDS HEART

A reputable Avian Certified Vet WOULD NEVER put a bird under to do wings and nails for just this very reason. I also don't understand why they just couldn't clip a nail a little short, grab some blood from that and do a DNA test with that sample ...

These points are neither here nor there, I hope that you can find someone to replace your friend in your home (but never in your heart). I would also hope that you can find a different vet, specifically one who specializes in "Exotics" you can look one up by state here: The Association of Avian Veterinarians | Association

I think you should send a copy of what you just told us to the vet who did this to your bird.

the vet knows what happen they sent us a card in the mail to us that they were sorry for what happen, as for the avian vet she had been doing it for 15 years

Couldnt this be a potential law suit? did you sign an agreement to let them put your bird under anesthesia??

Remind me if I ever become a vet to never treat any of your pets. In fact I may even be inclined to stop offering advice here all together - what would happen if I gave advice on how to deal with a behavioral problem, and while following my advice your house coincidentally caught on fire and your parrot died. Would you then sue me because your parrot died while you were taking my advice?

There are cases of vets behaving inappropriately and they should be pursued, but a tragic accident is just that.

In a Litigious Society, during hard economic times, laws suites tend to increase dramatically ...

HOWEVER, I do not feel that this is the intent of this thread. My statement was merely in SHOCK and basic disgust at to what happened in this situation. This is a heartbreaking story, and I am sorry that it happened to you.

they thought it would be less stres on the bird the way it was acting my wife said

So sorry about your loss, this is heartbreaking. I will never let a vet do this to any of my birds.

I might be able to notify you if I find any ads for a macaw where you live.

thank you miss queen i have called 10 rescues in IL and WI. most of them want 600 to 1000 for the birds that they have, for that price i will get a new hand raised one. to me it seems like they are getting birds for free and just reselling them to make money

Ok, um how about rude? I wasnt advising anyone to sue anyone else, and since you obviously dont know me I'll just let you know I've never sued anyone for anything. But if any person in a medical field causes the death of thier patient due to negligence then yes there is a potential for litigation. I think the fact that all they did was say sorry is pathetic, and they should not have put the bird under just for a grooming. The risks associated with anestesia and birds is just too high to be taking for a simple grooming, any sensible vet would know that.

I'll be cancelling my membership to this forum as I see what sort of judgemental, self absorbed people are moderators here.

Sometimes, when there is a tragic situation and kids involved, I think it is better to maybe spend the money and get a "baby". I have a few b&g that have been relinquished due to different circumstances, but after working with them for quite awhile, I don't feel that they would be good around kids. And especially after your kids trying to heal from that horrible situation, ( which I have to say, I am an avian and exotic vet technician, and we NEVER sedate to do wings and nails. If you have a good holder, then everything is fine.) Getting a baby that can grow up with all of you, I feel would be better in this situation. Just my opinion.

Also, there is a BIG difference in an Avian Spe******t and a clinic that does birds. I made that costly mistake 8 years ago. And that vet supposedly had been treating birds for 23 years. Good Luck.
