Hello! I'm new here! I recently rescued a 12 year old green cheek conure, he has a missing toenail and a gash on his beak! I went to the Breeder to get a teil from them and this little guy was on the back of the lady, I couldn't resist, she told me his story, and how she rescued him, I knew I had to have him! It's been 1 week and he is really shy, he eats great! But super shy, he steps up on you then climbs on the back of you neck, and that is were he stays, the other day I was looking on YouTube of birds, he got so excited from the other bird noise, it scared me because he never made a noise! My question is should I get a friend? If so why kind, I don't want him to be picked on anymore! But the excitement he showed was good!!

Welcome and be welcomed. Second birds are always a hard choice, but you have to consider several things, think really hard about them.
1. You will have to split your time between 2 birds.
2. They may hate each other
3. They may love each other and wind up hating you
4. 2x the vet bill
5. 2 x the food cost
6. 2X the toy costs

What will you do in each case?

Your little conure is new and nervous, give him a few weeks to grow accustomed to the new digs. If he already feels comfy on your neck, thats a good sign. Start clicker training, step up training, and do it religiously every day. Work with your parrot, developing trust is the big thing. Be consistent.

This board is one of the most helpful ones you will ever find, if you have any questions, please ask, no matter how silly or foolish they may seem. DOnt worry, I have already asked all the stupid ones!

My JoJo also flips over bird videos, but I resist the desire of a second bird for many reasons! I have him outside a lot and he calls back and forth with the local wildlife!

Hi, welcome to the forum! :)

Most birds respond strongly to the sounds of other birds - whether they'd do well with a new 'friend' or not. Kind of like if you were in a strange country and suddenly heard someone speaking your language. But you two will have a common language of your own soon enough if you work on it!
