My name is Cari, and I'm the happy owner of a jenday conure named Mango (overdone name, I know). She's a year old, and I've had her since she was a hatchling. Originally had the parents, but ended up giving them back to the original owner, as he missed them, and they were too protective of each other for me to properly work with (I really tried for a good six months). They were familiar with him, and were just fine going back to him.

Mango is a sweet yet stubborn bird. I've worked with her a lot, and have been fairly successful with her training. She spends most of the day out of her cage (at least when I'm home), and gets very upset if she can't be out when I'm there. Fortunately, I don't have a problem getting her to go in when I need to. She no longer has her wings clipped, but I don't mind the flying, so I just let them grow out. She now lands on my arm when I call her, although some days she refuses to stay off of me for more than 10 minutes at a time.

We have three cats, one of whom she seems to have taken a liking to. Sometimes I catch them chilling on top of her cage together. It's actually very cute.

I'm looking forward to the help and information I'll be able to get from this forum!

Hello and welcome. For Mango's sake please, please, please be extremely careful re your cat and Mango being out together. It only takes a few seconds for things to go horribly wrong and trust me we have stories on here if you care to research. I am sorry to put a dampener on your welcome but would hate to see you writing in our Bereavement Section some way down the road. Hoping for more pics and stories soon.

Welcome and be welcomed. Beware cats and parrots. This all I will say this topic.

Welcome to the forums, Cari!! Happy New Year and thanks for joining.

Please understand the concern for parrot-cat interaction! Not only can cats natural instinct cause problems, but the mere scratch or bite containing cat saliva can be deadly. While the two species can co-exist peacefully, you can be swiftly surprised, and most folks will not risk their bird.

Mango seems a very sweet and affectionate bird. Beautiful photo!!

Welcome to the forums! There are many knowledgeable bird people on here, so please ask any questions you may have and participate often!

I'll chime in on the cat thing only because there have to be dozens of stories per year of a bird and it's friend, either a dog or a cat or another bird, that hang out and get along great for years...Then one day, for whatever reason, the dog or cat or other bird gets spooked or has a natural instinct kick in and we have a dead bird and a inconsolable forum member. And if I'm not mistaken we just recently had a bird die from cat saliva, like a month or two ago? It was either here or on the cockatiel forum I belong to. The cat and the bird got along great, but the cat licked the bird or the bird's food, and that was it...So please, please do not ever let them alone unsupervised together...
