I know that veggies low in iron are supposed to be one of the largest percentages of my ekkie's diet, but I also know that fruit is really important too. But I've read that some fruits that are considered really good for humans are sometimes too sugary to be good for companion parrots. So what are the best, healthiest fruits for my parrot? The ones I can feed regularly instead of just as treats? I'd like to hear some of your thoughts on the matter.

I give my birds bananas, green and red grapes, watermelon, apples, etc. I also give pureed baby food fruits, and I find that if you're watching sugar intake, I find it's easier to measure how much is going in and which mixes will have less. Some will also have a vegetable base that would be lower in sugar but still "taste" like fruit.

Here are just some ideas (some of them ARE seasonal though)

* Pomegranate
* Blueberries
* Mangos
* Pears
* Peaches
* Cranberries
* Oranges
* Grapes
* Cantalope
* Papaya
* Plums
* Raspberries
* Prunes

I don't really believe there is a healthiest fruit, but here are some fruit I give to my alexandrine parakeet -

Grape
Peaches
Apple
Pineapple
Pear
Paw paw
Cranberries
Blueberries (Ozzie's fav)
Mango
Kiwi fruit
Watermelon
Banana
Papaya
Apricots
Cherries
Currants
Strawberries

You guys added lots to my list, thanks! Are there any fruits I should AVOID no matter what (excluding the obvious avacado)? And what about good/bad veggies?

As for the fruits, ALWAYS remove the pits. :) Feed apples and pears sparingly, as they are VERY high in sugar ;)

I forgot CHERRIES in the fruit section (pitted).

Some veggies I can think of that I feed raw and others must be cooked (washed thoroughly, and I personally prefer organic)

* broccoli
* bell peppers, jalapenos, cherry peppers
* cauliflower
* KALE (very healthy, you can feed raw or steamed)
* yams (cooked)
* spinach
* collared greens (raw or steamed)
* dandelion leaves
* turnips
* beets
* alfalfa
* carrots (raw or steamed)
* eggplant
* squash
* asparagus
* green beans
* brussels sprouts
* zucchini
* chard
* pea pods
* sweet peas

....that's all this early brain can come up with right now. :eek:

I read an article recently in Parrots Magazine of someone who fed asparagus to their parrots and they died as it contains a kind of toxin. In the wild birds eat clay etc to combat it but are unable to do so in captivitiy.
So thought would pass on as it did not list it anywhere forbidden but hate to think some parrot surrcombe to it because of lack of advise

I was told by my vet to use the grapes sparingly as they are pretty high in sugar- for whatever its worth-since then I only give grapes 1 or 2 at a time and maybe 3 times a week.

cooper get apple orange(he doesnt liek but will eat a bite from time to time), pomagranite, kiwi, banana, grapes,

I give Mango the really nutritious fruits for breakfast, this includes blueberries, raspberries, blackberries (pretty much any kind of berry), pomegranate, and/or mango. He also has this stuff in several of his foraging toys throughout the day. He always has access to raw carrot, bell pepper, chili peppers broccoli and kale. The sugary stuff is given as treats or if Im eating it (I love fruit). So oranges, apples, pear, banana, grapefruit (mango's favorite), and grapes. He also gets sweet potato cooked and raw and a variety of other veggies when we eat them.
