Hello, my name is JP. I'm in Hb Cal.

This summer, I got an 8 week old violet pied lovebird from a local breeder. I named her/it(?) Lily. With no experience I watched youtube turtorials to train. I had made huge leaps in socialization in weeks. By the 2 monthmark I had her flying to me and ringing a bell on command. I spent 2 hours a day minimum loving her. I felt affection towards her, my life revolved around her really. She goes where I go.

Lately I've been taking her on walks, She sits on my shoulder and uses body langugae to tell me if i should pick her up and set her down. She'll follow me and stays close 24/7. @ days in a row we went to the same park basketball court(vacant) to fly and climb trees.

After 2 hours of walking and playing. She wantedto hop down and eat nuts. I noticed a panic head bob. For the first time really, in 6 months, she decided to fly away from me. But it was because a Cooper's hawk was sitting top of us and swooped down and pounced.

She managed to bite it enough to keep it stationary maybe for long enough for me to get my hands on them if I had acted. It then Hopped up top of me on a branch ( At this point I could hear not a scream, but like repetive peep like a duck) loosing it's footing becuase she was fighting back. I tried to climb but it had taken off.

I collected what feathers I could gather in a bag then had a moment of silence. I'm devastated. Regretful and have no idea where to go.

Jp -cheers :whiteblue:

Oh, JP... so many mistakes, so many foolish things. And I did them ALL when I was a new bird owner 30 years ago...
Please read up on safety and security issues here... the SEARCH tab is great.
I'm sorry for this tragedy.
Poor little parrot.

This is so painful and common! The dangers of the outdoors is extreme, and unforgiving! I am so sorry for your pain!

Thanks guys. I accept my faults and how they affected her life.

I am so very sorry for your loss of Lily. Glad you joined the forum, and wish your first post was under better circumstances. May Lily's wonderful memories be a comfort as you grieve.
