Having to sell Jasper : (

I am absolutely gutted so dont need anyone having a go at me as I couldnt of researched anymore on the breed. My chest just cant deal with the smell which I have since found out is normal eclectus smell. So if your interested I am selling him for £650 he is 15 weeks old has birth cirtificate. I have also got a brand new cage aswell as brand new toys worth around £200 and also specialy made play top cover for bed time. So if you want cage toys etc it will be £800 its a Liberta Cambridge large cage. I have also done a folder with foods Eclectus can and cant have aswell as Eclectus Book. I also have a big bag off seed (no sunflower or peanuts) from scralets essentials website. I have also started to give him formular at night time aswell as his normal fruit and veg depending what I give him. I am in south yorkshire and cant drive also has a carry cage aswell. Like I said please dont ask if I have tried everything I have bought 2 diferent decent Hepa Air Purifiers got a steamer cleaned him every night inside and out.

Oh sweets, my heart is hurting for you. That is SUCH a hard decision to make. Having asthma myself I know what you're going through in how difficult it can be, I'm just lucky my girl doesn't affect me.
If you were in Australia I'd consider buying Jasper!!!

So sorry to hear this, I don't think anyone could blame you for not doing your research regarding this issue for you, as I understand it, if anything eclectus parrots are a preferred bird for those with respiratory concerns.

I assume you have taken Jasper to a vet to confirm the smell is his natural odour? I only mention it as I just haven't heard of this being an issue, and would hate for you to have to give up Jasper over something other than an intolerance to his natural odour (please rest assured this is not a criticism, or in any way having a go at you, I just know how guttered I would be if I had to give up my two and wanted to make sure you hadn't overlooked the possibility of the smell being something other than natural odour).

I wish you and Jasper all the best, if it's Jaspers natural odour you can't tolerate, then you really are doing the best thing for Jasper, as hard as it must be, and I really respect that!

EDIT: Just read your other post (where you mentioned seeing a vet), so obviously you have investigated all avenues, so sorry to hear that

Thanks to you both yeah I have taken him to vet and they say its his mormal odor. I have realised my asthma is more triggered by smell than anything else. I am so pissed of as I researched into Eclectus so much and everyone said if you got asthma this is the best breed. Now I have to make sure i find someone who knows about Eclectus as I am not selling him to anyone.

I am so sorry to hear that, I know how excited you were to get him Returning to the breeder might be the best option like Chris mentioned, so you know he'll be taken care of until he gets a new home.

Is there another room you could use for Jasper instead of where he's in now? Are you bathing him regularly and cleaning his cage often? Trying to figure out why he'd be such a trigger. I don't have any breathing problems myself so I can't relate, just trying to help think of some things.

Considering that you seem to have a specific sensitivity to the particular odor of this ekkie, have you considered that your vet may not be smelling exactly what you are? That is to say, what if there is an aspect to his aroma that is subtly mixed in with his natural musk? An aspect that is only obvious to you because of your allergy and specific sensitivity?

I ask this because your vet, lacking your particular sensitivity, might only be smelling the usual odor of an ekkie. To rule this out, you might want to find an ekkie from a different source and see if you detect the same odor. If you do, then you can reasonably conclude that it is indeed the natural ekkie aroma that is getting to you. But if you don't, then there is a good chance that there really is an unnatural scent exuding from your ekkie.

As Cameron said, this isn't to criticize or have a go at you in any way. It's just to eliminate all possibilities.

I so agree with this ! Example, I just tried a new laundry detergent that has a special release fresh sent. Well it so choked me, I wouldn't let JoJo around the clothes! Showed daughter, oh wow, smells like outdoors!?!! Her boyfriend couldn't smell anything! For me, throat burning eyes watering! I am rewashing all these clothes right now! Some folks gag on artificial sweeteners,(me), others can't tast it!
You can easily have a sensitivity to something that is wrong!

Just another thought there isn't any chance it is related to any food of his for instance and there isnt any peanuts or dust in it by chance.

I didnt want to multi quote everyone or there would be a whole new page ha ha ha. yeah I am showering him every other day. I have changed his diet from mainly sunflower parrot food and pellets what breeder told me to feed him to fruit and veg. i also give him dried seed mix but no sunflower or peanuts in the mix. As for smell and clothes washing I cant have the smelling conditioners as that effects me to. I live in a bunglowe so no where else really to have his cage as I mainly am in front room. He is out at the minute on top of his play stand. He is also still timid although better than he was 2-3 weeks ago, I am trying everything as I really REALLY dont want him to go. its a crap sittuation to be in thats for sure.

No I didnt as I dont want to send him back to him due to hearing of parrots cages on top of each other from searching the internet. Also shouted warning signs when he said to feed Jasper on parrot food ie loads sunflower seeds and pellets. Only meantioned fruit veg when I meantioned it myself. So Irefuse to send him back I would rather try sort it out myself and in mean time give him the love he deserves. Also been told he needs to be given baby formular and he is anything but tame. The website said they was silly tame and hand reared well Jasper would only take food from me last week.

I was going to comment here a couple of times and held back because it was the scent of the bird that was your problem but then I thought it might be good to mention my experience. I found after getting Mr Biggles (WFA) that I was having breathing problems...I couldnt figure out why I was reacting as I did as Ive never had an allergy to birds but I soon discovered that it wasnt Mr Biggles I was allergic to but his food specific to Amazons and then the smell of zupreem pellets which had never affected me befoee had also got the back of my throat just like was described in one of the other posts about a laundry item...plumsmum has mentioned dust so I thought Id add my 2 cents worth...I took hayfever anti alergy medication and I dont drink in the aroma of Mr Biggles food anymore when I feed him and though it took the best part of a week to clear up I dont have problems now but I continnue to take the allergy meds. You may have already considered these things but just in case I thought it worth mentioning. It would be nice to think a solution could be found as you are so attached to him but if not then hopefully you will get a good home for him soon. So sorry this has happened to you. I cant imagine how Id feel if I were in your shoes.
