I have one bird. He is a Black Capped Conure and his name is Harley. His hatch date is 2/3/2014.
Harley decided he was going to take a few small sips of my coffee while I was out of the room. He knows better than to touch it while I'm in the same room but he tried to pull a fast one on my boyfriend.

Is he going to be okay? Maybe just get the runs?? I'm scared to death right now!!!

As long as it was only a little he should be fine....but depending on how much milk/cream was in in beware the splash zone. Willow will dive-bomb mine if I don't pay attention, and I'm pretty good about it but she gets a little occasionally.

Zilla's previous owners used to let her share their coffee every day. I have never let her share mine, but I have let her lick the bottom of the empty cup :D

He'll be fine!

Oh that is such a relief. Thanks guys!

Could i assume the same for tea? as its less caffeine (i use less milk) and i only use honey.

Ya he should be good! Sneaky little weasels! They seem to almost always get what the want when they are determined. There have been times that Lilo got a sip of my coffee when I wasn't looking and she is fine. :) I'm sorry he caused you so much worry! They seem so fragile but maybe they are a little more hardy then we think!

Tootsie used to always get morning coffee in her previous home. To this day, if I am drinking anything out of a mug she gets excited and thinks she is entitled to have a drink. I hear about it if I don't share. Loudly.

There are very few things humans can consume that are acutely toxic to parrots, but lots of things they shouldn't have because too much and/or consuming frequently can be toxic (if that makes sense). I totally get your concern though. Kiwi got hold of a piece of onion once and I freaked out. He was fine, though I was ready to take him to the vet:p.

I'll bet Zilla was cranky for the first few days you had her, and she was detoxing! Did you notice anything behavioral that went away after a week or so?

I appreciate this thread. I'm new to life with a conure, and it's helpful to me to ward off the impending panic of some of these situations before they happen. Very good to know that a little coffee won't make my Pepe immediately keel over, although I'll still be vigilant, of course. :green: :32:

Zilla was so ill when I got her I wouldn't have noticed a withdrawal from caffeine. She came to me just over a year ago with an upper respiratory infection, asper in her air sacs, her kidney's and liver were not functioning well, she was dirty and hadn't had a shower for what looked like months and she was scared to death of the spray bottle.

Lucky for her I found this forum and an awesome avian vet and it took several months of diligent care and medication, but she is perfect now! Well, as perfect as a demanding, has to have everything I have, has to "help" me do everything, wants to kill my phone & the sewing machine, has to chase the cats away from me, must throw all "yucky" food out of her dish immediately before it can infect the "good" stuff, must yell at me about the birds outside eating "her" food, and won't let anyone but me touch her little feather ball can be! :D

There have been several times in the past that Skittles has snuck coffee with cream and sugar behind my back and he's always been fine - BUT - it's not something I would risk by sharing it with him on a regular basis.

I do know this, birds have a fast metabolism so any effects of the coffee will have worn off within a few hours.

BUT, repeated exposure to unhealthy foods WILL cause harmful effects. I used to feed Peaches bologna and Doritos on a regular basis when I first got her (20 yrs ago) and I always thought she was fine - nothing out of the ordinary. She kept getting respiratory infections and I never put the two together. Finally, during a visit with a new vet - he told me she was malnourished with a Vitamin A deficiency. I stopped feeding her that junk and switched her to Harrisons'. She hasn't had an infection since.

Point being, we may think it's harmless and it may not yield any immediate consequence - but repeated occurrences will catch up. So I wouldn't worry too much about a single instance here and there. It's the long-term exposure that should be avoided.

It's ALWAYS hard for me to not share something with Skittles that he really wants - but I have to say to myself that by depriving him of that I am actually looking out for his best interest.

There have been a few times he's 'snuck' things only to throw them up and to be honest, that's been a great deterrent for me. I think to myself - if I make him happy by giving him something he can't have - I'll also have to see him get sick as a result.

One of our Goffins, Bubo, used to get crazy to sip just a bit of my coffee. I didn't think it was enough to be a problem and it was diluted with half and half. She likes dairy products a lot and I have never seen a problem with her having them but I decided coffee wasn't a good idea for an ADHD bird, so now I drink my coffee before I get the birds out of the bird room.
Sometimes I drink tea, in the birds have never been interested but I'm curious. I have read that t can have more caffeine than coffee and it has other nutrients or properties?
I'm also wondering about stevia and birds.
