Today is Kiwi's 6th adoption day! I'm so happy the bird I'm about to wake up isn't anything like the one I brought home in 2008! 'We' will be celebrating with homemade, applesauce-sweetened carob 'brownies' (carob is a bird safe chocolate alternative), and a sauce cup of cranberry orange smoothie!

I will try to get some pics of the my buddy enjoying his treats later:D

Happy Adoption Day, Kiwi!!! I hope your day is perfect! Enjoy your special treats!

Ouch! April, those photos are an excellent example of how much progress you and Kiwi have made in six years. Enjoy your special day and I hope you get kisses rather than chomps.

Would you mind posting Kiwi's carob brownie recipe?

Happy Adoption day you beautiful Kiwi-Boy!!

I know he hit the JACKPOT when you and your hubby brought him home, April! WOW, you've come such a long way with him!

Can't wait for subsequent pictures of his (and your) day together. :D

Would you mind posting Kiwi's carob brownie recipe?

I'm pretty sure carob powder and unsweetened carob chips can be substituted 1:1 for coco powder and chocolate chips in any brownie/cookie recipe, and applesauce is substituted 1:1 for sugar, but you have to reduce the liquids in the recipe by 1/2 cup for every one cup of applesauce. This is the recipe I've been using though, and it comes out very yummy (it's totally vegan and somewhat healthy though)!

1 1/2 cup buckwheat flour
1/2cup carob powder
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup oat milk
1/3 cup olive oil
1/2cup carob chips

(I use a stand mixer)- Mix dry ingredients together with wet ingredients. Once well mixed, add carob chips, mix in and pour batter into greased 8” x 8” pan. Bake at 325°F for 30-40 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.

And while carob is not toxic for birds (unlike chocolate), I probably wouldn't make it a regular part of a birds diet. I looked into carob and it's safety to share with Kiwi AFTER I started using it as a chocolate substitute for myself. I found nothing to indicate it has any toxic to parrots substances in it and is ok to feed in small amounts:)

Happy Adoption Day, Kiwi!!! April, that must have been sore! And it wasn't a place where you could cover it up so it wasn't noticeable either...

Happy Adoption Day Kiwi! What a wonderfully long way the beautiful Kiwi has come:) And that recipe sounds amazing, thank you for sharing:)
Also looking froward to seeing those pics of Kiwi enjoying his treats!

The time he bit my nose was several years ago and (knock on wood) the last bad bite I got from him. He's nipped me and 'grazed' off some skin on my hand a couple times since then, but thankfully I think we've moved past the vicious, flesh tearing bites for good!

Aw happy gotcha day! Wonderful job on the training! What a transformation! :) Lilo says hi! Oh and pretty bird! Oh and a bunch of happy shrills! :)

Happy Birthday, Kiwi! I love hearing stories about you. You are fortunate among all birds to have such a committed and understanding human flock to care for you. Looking forward to seeing pictures of you enjoying your "cake" and "milkshake."

Happy Adoption Day Kiwi!!!!!!!

April, Kiwi is a credit to you and your husband for the dedication that you have shown to him. The love is clearly visible bewteen you all. It is wonderful to see that with hardwork, everybirdie has a chance.

Thanks also for the wonderful recipe. I think I will definitely be trying this one. Looking forward to some wonderful Kiwi photos. :)

I will get pics up soon. I had some 'brownies', but my husband ate like half of them after I went to bed last night:eek::eek::eek: They are actually intended for humans, not bird baked goods per se, just safe for birds to share due to no toxic or junk ingredients;). Keep in mind I'm a vegan and a health nut so MY idea of sweets and baked goodies probably sounds like bird food to most people:54:

I'm a little late to this thread (was gone ALL day yesterday) but Happy Adoption Day Kiwi! Hope he enjoyed his "brownie"

Kiwi (and hubby) enjoyed the brownie quite a bit! lol.

This was a freshly baked brownie the night before lololol:eek:. Fortunately, I don't think theres a whole lot of calories/fat in something like this and it's not as though a "big" piece for Kiwi was a "big" piece overall;):

Loco waves hello and says Happy Adoption Day Kiwi!!!!

Lol. Did Loco learn to wave?:D Too cute. Kiwi says "thanks".

Actually, Kiwi says "thanks", or more "HONK!" (a happy noise) to everyone who wished him a happy adoption day. He had no idea why his day was filled with treats, but he sure was in a good mood;)

I love seeing pictures of Kiwi! He looks like he really enjoyenjoyed his brownie! Yes, Loco learned how to wave. It's amazing what he'll do for sunflower seeds! LOL

such a great story! :) <3

He is a beautiful bird!
