Hey guys,

I noticed Jasper has one of his flight feathers hanging down tonight. He's been picking at it, looks like he's trying to get it out but not successful so far. It's actually twisted around upside down.

I *think* it's part of his moult but not sure. He should be able to work it out himself right?

Have you given it a (light) tug? Kiwi occasionally gets wonnky feathers and usually a light tug is all it takes, they come right out:) And he will let you know if it's not time for that feather to go yet;)

Gizmo has had a feather like that a few times in the past when moulting, he didn't seem concerned so I just left them alone, and they fell out during flight.

Cheers,

Cameron

This happens to Yoshi quite often as he is playing and moving around in his cage. Usually he puts it back into position himself while he is preening. One time his whole wing looked out of position and he was wobbling around not walking properly and I thought for sure he damaged his wing but one little flicker and he fixed it right up lol.

All is good! I see the feather on the bottom of his cage this morning :)

Thanks for the advice for next time. Thought it was a little strange to see him working at it as I hadn't noticed him doing that with the 4 he's lost so far!

This moult is taking forever!

Jasper has another loose, hanging feather like the other day. On the *same* wing. Is that normal??

I've observed this more frequently with molting parrots. It probably causes them some discomfort. Some of my birds tolerate a gentle effort to re-tweak the feather while others are noticeably self-conscious and resist.

I save many of the more beautiful wing feathers; if you catch them shortly after separation they can be in excellent condition. Some of my parrots enjoy chewing on freshly deposited feathers!
