So damn cute & learning fast!!
Hey there!
I have to admit, I have no idea as to what I should say, or what I'm supposed to say so I'll probably just end up rambling. Besides all that, I'm kind of hoping I can get to know this forum a little better because it's so informative, and the people on this site are so helpful and kind!
(Yes, I'll admit to looming around the site for the past week or so!)

I guess this is the introduction part: You can me Leia, I'm 15 years old, and I live in Hawaii. I know how it sounds, but its much more work than luxury, but I have to admit that this rock has definitely made me who I am :]

I know that I probably signed up for this site prematurely as I don't even own a bird yet, but I've placed an order for a baby hand-raised Nobilis macaw (otherwise known as a Hahn Macaw, or a Red-shouldered Macaw) from Sweet Leilani's Aviary! I was hoping to get some insight from other bird owners to help me shape my future baby, and any tips or advice I should know in advance since I've never had a bird quite this large—though I know I'm up for the challenge! :green2:

I'm so excited to adopt that I've already bought the cage and I have a shopping cart full of toys, perches, vitamins, lighting systems, food, and even treats! I've worked hard to prove that I can both provide and care for a bird needs and wants on my own, with my own funds, research, and of course, affection! I've had one lovebird before, named Kiwe. He was hand-raised peach/blue face lovebird, sweet as a button, and just like an infant in our house—he was the baby of the house. He was the light of my life for nearly 3 years, but unfortunately there's been a hole in my heart without him after his passing. I know "He's just a bird", but there wasn't a bird quite like him. He knew to kiss your tears away, play the day away, and he could talk your ear off until the break of day—he was an amazing talker.

I just realized how much I've written. . . oops~!
Ps. I've been thinking about naming my Hahn's either Tiki, Teluc, or Mochi. What do you think would be most fitting for a Hahan, or do you have any suggestions? It'll be another couple of months—to maybe even a year—before my Hahn is born. So I have a lot of time to think.
(I think everyone knows what a Tiki is, and it kind of works because it's islandy and very cute for either female or male?)
(Teluc is Aztec meaning "Second-born" and I'm second in line for a Hahn Macaw, kind of works, doesn't it?)
(Mochi is a sweet Japanese candy—great for either a boy or girl. Oh, and I'm also learning japanese as of the moment!)
Thank you for reading…!

Welcome, you will find a lot of helpful people here with an amazing amount of information.

Hello, Welcome from California :)

I was just thinking about people who own parrots in HI. I lived in Maui for awhile and was thinking about moving back. I don't know how my birds would handle a move like that. As it is, I will have to rehome my snakes. Are there alot of parrot owners on your Island? I dont remember very many pet places that specialized in parrots on Maui. Shipping their food would be very high my birds are pigs with wings....

Welcome to the forum Hahns Macaws are adorable. Keep us posted when you get closer to geting him/her.

Welcome to our forum! Sorry to hear about your Kiwe's passing. They are never "just a bird", they are our babies, our loves, don't let anybody tell you otherwise! Look forward to pictures of your new baby. I think both of those names choices are great! You will find lots of good information here, and lots of great people too!

@INDI
Wow, Australia is mighty far away—proving how universal this forum really is! I have to say, I've been frequenting this sight more and more, and I'm really starting to like it! I hope I can become a "regular", if that makes sense. Thank you sincerely for your condolences, though I didn't mean to "vent", though I'm amazed at how understanding people are over the loss of a bird… some people found the death comical.
Your Tiki sounds so cute, and I'm always mesmerized Ringnecks! They're truly beautiful, and your bird's name is darling and so fitting!
Thanks so much, Kitty!

@JensFlock
Thank you very much, and I agree! There are a ton of people here with a ton of helpful information!

@Mele
Ah, I love California by the way, you lucky! Currently, we're debating the possibilities of moving back since my father works 9 months out of the year there, and I was actually born in California as well. I live in Kauai, and living here is best described as being strapped to an rock while being dragged to the bottom of the ocean! :p In all seriousness, living in paradise is no vacation as many know.
Ps. Shipping a bird to Hawaii was OUT of the question for me since I have to cover all expenses on my own while working at a small Shave Ice parlor. First of all, birds seem to be more expensive anywhere else. Second, You have to quarantine the bird in a Vet's office. Then you can only send your bird via cargo—meaning you can't fly with your birds in the cabin. The list goes on, and the prices seem to sky rocket. I actually bought a cage online from California, that was $340 for their special, but I had to pay $260 in shipping after they condensed 3 boxes into two in addition to giving me a $150 to help cover shipping fees. In Kauai there is one pet store that I can think of, and most generic places like Walmart and Kmart don't even carry bird essentials. So yes, shipping is the only option and it's quite painful, to say in the least.
Haha, enough with the rant! Thanks, and I'm so excited I can hardly stand it—despite my Hahn isn't even born or conceived yet!

@Rio Mom
Thank you as well for your condolences, and I'm sincerely apologetic for Rio's passing as well. It's unfortunate that many birds must fly to better places so soon. Thank you again , and I know when I hear anything of my babies birth I won't be able to sit still—even now I can't! As I've seen so far, there are a ton of great people and information!
Thank you, and once again, my heart goes out to you and your family.

Welcome from England!
I find it sad to read that people found your babys death as comical, I've had that experience too and it made me... very angry. They are our children, even if they are feathered/furred/finned/etc! I'm still recovering from the loss of my Wonsy, a little budgie who was my world. Merlin and the 'gang' are helping with that, but Wonsy is still very much a big thing for me.

A hahns macaw sounds lovely! Such a shame with all the shipping prices! Have you put your deposit down on your baby already or?

You sound prepared, good luck and feel free to ask anything!

Wow, England is real far from Hawaii! (Almost/About half way around the world.) This may be an incredibly stupid question, but I wonder of English people's parrots have accents too! That sounds so adorable!

I'm so sorry you went through the same rude remarks. Children can be evil little buggers… but teenagers can be minions of the devil. Haha, not to say I am exempt of course. I'm sure everyone has their bratty moments and I won't pretend to be a saint or anything—I just don't have time for nonsense. I'm so sorry about Wonsy, too. (Such a cute name!) I know it's incredibly heart wrenching to see anything's passed. :40:

Oh, I wish I could say I had a down deposit on my Hahn. However, the woman, who is incredibly wonderful—though very busy—doesn't exept down deposits until the bird is born. In fact, I'm actually praying and hoping that the birds start their breeding again before the year is over since Hahn's don't ussually breed during winter months. However, since we're in Hawaii I might not have to worry about the diffrent changes in weather… but a birds breeding cycle is a birds breeding cycle. If anything, I was almost assured that I'd have a Hahn next year, so I feel partly foolish for buying the cage in such advance.

Again, thank you too! I'm sure I have a million questions, but questions that have an actual point… far and few between. lol

Thank you too, and I'll be the first to admit that this place is way more than just welcoming! Everyone is so friendly, and very knowledgable as well! I like how it's tailored to both advanced and inexperienced bird owners alike!
Thans so much!
