Paco: Yellow Naped Amazon
Hi all. I just became the owner of a 15 year old yellow naped amazon name Paco. The only sound he has made so far is a "grunt" sound. Just wondering if anyone knows what that might signify?

I used to own a CAG so I have parrot experience and understand it will take some time for Paco to warm up to me. I will try to upload a video of the sound. I recorded one on my phone, but apparently my phone was set on a high quality setting.

Body language is completely different between Amazon and CAG's.
I had 30 years experience with amazon parrots before I got my CAG.
It did not help.
You know how to care for them, feed them and handle them.
but the body language is like dealing with an alien.
The stick thread at the begging of the amazon thread on body language will help you a lot. I highly recommend it.

LOL, the STICK thread is BEGGING?

I am at work, can't spend a lot of time on the PC.
I just pop on/off when I can.

+ worlds worst speller.

No good deed goes unpunished!

Any number of possible meanings! Likely a contact call, likely for the past owner(s).

Best of luck to you and your new buddy!! May your problems be few!!

I think it might a sound he makes when he is nervous or scared.

I know it will take time to bond. At least so far i am able to (most of the time put my finger on the upper part of his beak and yesterday he let me scratch his head for a few minutes.

What I call a grunt in YNA is a sign of contentment. Favorite food or scratches in the right spot.

Seeing as mine is new, I am guessing that sound is not contentment...lol

The sound of stress or unhappy is a longer , ahh sound. Several syllables long. If I could hear it in a video I could better translate for you.

To me that sound more like a " yeah, OK," . Maybe a sort of greeting type thing. Not really happy to see you but acknowledge you.
