Perjo - Female CAG hatch Nov 2015
Perjo will be 1yo this month, she doesn't talk yet but the past 2-3 weeks she has given me the impression she is trying to or on the verge of. She goes from her more common whistling vocalizing to a bit of a strange warping of sounds in a bit of a higher tone that sounds a little bit like words I say to her once in a while in a higher voice. (We all have our normal voice and our FIDs voice).

So I'm wondering, did most of your CAGS just blurt out words that were easily recognized or did they start by warping the words a bit or half assing them?

Did you feel there was any sign they were on the verge of talking?

Dont know about CAGs but Salty started talking around 7 months, way early. We did use a repeater box for a month or so, but after he started talking we stopped. Try using one , see what happens. Might let him practice some , til he gets the hang of it.

IMO repeater boxes seem a bit tortuous. There's no context and it strikes me as becoming annoying as time goes on.

I'm not trying to rush her, I'm just trying to read her properly and help naturally foster he instinct to speak our language.

I think living along and her not hearing others speak in our presence kind of impacts her growth in that area. We had scheduled visitors twice a week all summer, just so they could call me by my name, do simple tasks in front of her, and call her by her name. Since summer ended we don't have such opportunities now.

DRB... I think you really have a point about hearing/watching interactions. The Rbird has learned most of the names he knows from hearing people call me... pets... people... by name. Phrases, too. My ol' man's Southern accent is well-represented! The only stuff he ever learned from tv or tapes was from Paula Abdul or J-Lo. Go figure.
Maybe just be sure you verbalize a lot... talk to yourself! Maybe talk to the tv or radio...

My Grey didn't start talking very much until he was almost 2. He would practice when no one was in the room or he thought he was alone. As he gained confidence, he started communicating verbally more and more. He's 14 now and is able to carry on two-way conversations and ask for things he wants by name. They are amazingly intelligent creatures. Enjoy the experience.

As a general rule, from what I've gathered, 1 year old is when to expect greys to start talking. Nigel has been saying his name for about 7 months now (early start!!!!) he is 11 months old. He started saying my daughter's name, pretty boy, and the newest addition, "go poop" (which is appropriately paired with said poop). He whistles like crazy too and mimics a lot of what he hears. They are so fun.

I have heard of greys not talking, but being very vocal nevertheless.

It has been so long I cannot recall! While celebrated for speech ability, they can mimic sounds with great tonal accuracy. IIRC this was the first step on the way to talking.

Smokey started to talk before a year old, can't remember exactly, but she started with other common stuff first..the phone ringing,my mom coughing ( Mom actually thought Smokes was sick..Mom said to me Smokey is coughing, and when I heard it,it was my MOMS cough lol)

But her very first words were a clear as a bell " How are you?" That's what my mom would ask Smokes every morning when she got uncovered, and one morning Smokey beat her to the punch line, blurting it out before mom could ask her.

I guess it depends on the birdie on how well and soon they start to chatter.
It didn't take BB long at all to speak his first words "what are you doing?"
And with Amy...prolly a year.
