Timneh African grey
I've had my rescue grey for about a month now, and he was beginning to trust me, allowing me to pet him and scratch his neck and give him kisses. I had to go visit family this weekend, and I couldn't take Baby the parrot with me. He was home with my fiance (who he doesn't seem to like very much).
When I got home, Baby would not let me pet him or scratch his neck at all. He bit me very soundly on the nose and flew away from me. :(

Do greys get mad when we travel? Or is it more likely that my fiance pushed too hard to get close to him while I was away? What can I do to win Baby's trust and love back? I feel quite upset and dismal...he hasn't bitten me in a long time.

That nip on the nose will teach you! :) Take him along next time.

Portaperch, I'm with you. As I type this Sunny is sitting between us in the pickup rolling north on a five day trip. Urban legend I would say your grey is mad at you. It probably brought back memories of the whole rehoming trauma. Sunny gets mad sometimes if we just go to town for the day.

Thanks guys. He has calmed back down...I'm back to where I can sit quietly with him and scratch his neck and pet him, but he's still nervous about stepping up from his perch to my arm (although he was always iffy about that). What do you guys suggest for a travel cage for him- his home cage is way too large for me to cart around if I go to visit my parents for a weekend.

I don't have a grey, and for the most part, my birds are rather happy to have me back! But one of them can be a bit prissy and he has to share his unhappiness with me before saying "ok, welcome home!" lol

There are travel cages made specifically for parrots in mind. I think the Kings Travel Cages are probably the best ones out there! Or, you could also use a small dog/cat kennel with, or without, a perch inside!

You may want to invest in a collapsible cage (Midwest cages?) to take along so he wouldn't be stuck to a smaller cage for the entire trip.

my grey actually misses me when i am gone for a extended trip. when i get home she paces like a lion in her cage and makes these odd soft noises that are best described as cooing noises. when i let her out of her cage she goes to my shoulder and pushes the top of her head in my neck while making the cooing noises.

My sennie wouldn't move from her spot in her cage and just stared wide eyed at me. When I reached in to pick her up she fluffed and started shaking while keeping eye contact and stepped up in the most ginger and careful way I'd ever felt. She was so saying, "You're back? I'd given up hope you still loved me!" it was disbelief and joy if I'd ever felt it!

Sorry I haven't been on in a bit; I've been really busy with work and the birds. Baby's back to his old loving self, but unfortunately I have to go to a business conference where I cannot take him. I've looked into every option to bring him along, but it's halfway across the country and it would be too stressful for him, plus I can't find a hotel where I can have him with me. I am having a trusted friend stay at my place while I am gone to take care of the animals- hopefully this isn't too much of a shock for Baby and he will be happy when I return.

What you could do is record your voice and give it to the friend and ask her/ him. To play it a few times so it could help him ( birdie)while your away.It works depends on bird and if shes comortable with birds ask her to handle him, scritches, scartches, snuggles LOL

So busy with work again, I hven't been around much. Baby's doing wonderfully....he was actually thrilled to see me when I got back from the business conference and readily came to me to snuggle. He's been a great bird, much more confident and happy and affectionate. I love this little guy so much!

Good to know that everything is ok now. Me and DH are going to trip for 5 days and I take my AG to her breeder for babysitting. Hopefully she'll be fine.

I'm nervous about Neytiri. I have to travel beginning of feb and have to board Neytiri for a few days as hubby's not ready yet to handle her on his own. I'm taking her to visit the shop a few times (it's where she was raised before I brought her home) so she can remember it.
