Hello everyone! I am FeatherBrain, but my real name is Kristina. After copiously studying parrots, conures in particular (four months now), I finally consulted with my family and landlord and purchased a baby sun conure whom I have named Ori (it means "My ray of light", which is quite fitting for a sun, no?) It's still being weaned, the breeder predicts that it will be available for pick-up around Saturday. He is a fantastic person with a policy on same-day vet visits, in that the bird must be certified as healthy on the day of purchase by a certified avian vet (a man I have researched and found out is highly respected and admired in the Chicago area). The breeder will even partially cover the cost of the first visit, so needless to say, we're excited!
I am 20 years old and am taking a break from university classes due to some health issues (studying for a degree in biology), and after consulting with my doctor as well as taking into account my future study and living plans, I realize that this is the perfect companion for me during the next 30 years of my lifetime.
Ori's cage is already set up. It's the F040 Prevue flight cage, 52" tall and 32" wide. Everything non-stick has left the home, the HEPA purifier has been installed, and all of the bulbs in my room were already full spectrum so I consider that a plus. The organic pellets and the rest of the toys are arriving on Wednesday, and my mom, who works for American Airlines, has graciously provided a carrier for Ori as well. We're all set up and ready to go!
Once Ori settles and becomes accustomed enough I plan on starting clicker/touch training. Later down the road I will be obtaining a harness as well so we can take lovely walks in the mornings and evenings when it's not too hot, as Chicago summers tend to be brutal.
So yeah, I feel like an expectant mom! It's great to be here!
