i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
Thanks ahead of time for all the help, I know I have been asking tons of questions about the soon arrival of our greenwing Moses. I am curious if any other macaw owners know how much their greenwings weighed at three months. I just had Moses weighed today, he was hatched on May 25th and today he weighed 1210 grams. I would love to compare weights, I want to keep track of his weight throughout his first couple of years. I didn't do this when Dorothy (my cag) was a baby, I never kept all of her weights and I wish I did!

I am also curious, it seems like the actual beak(not the length) the actual size of the beak is much bigger in the grown birds, do their beaks get actually larger, wider etc.?

Not sure how much this will help, but Bongo, our flame macaw weighed in at 1193 grams this morning. he turned 10 weeks old yesterday.

One of his parents was a green wing.

That sounds like a similar weight, so I wouldn't think that Moses is that much larger than other greenwings. It's hard for me to judge. I am so excited about bringing him home, Bongo how is your baby doing? I would love to see pictures!

Brianlinkles, Congratulation with your new baby GW. GW Babies grow very fast, their beak will also never stop growing, it's like your finger nails, this is one of the reasons why you need wood toys and concrete perches in the catge so they GW can grind their beaks and nails.
There are many different sizes when it comes to a GW, The best way to get an idea on the size of your baby is to compare it to the Mother and Father, look at their feet.
Talking from expierence here, my Breeder alowed me to see my GW Neleno's Mom and Dad and the Mom was on the avg size where as the Dad was huge for a GW. They layed 2 eggs, one female and one male. My male GW Neleno was very much larger then his sister and has huge feet. I started to visit my Neleno on weekends when I could and work would allow. I live in MD and my Breeder lives in VA. I watched my baby grow and handled him at every visit. This way my Neleno knew me prior to me taking him home. I would advise you to dop the same if you can. At approx 3-4 months old, Neleno's feet were as big as my hands, his sister on the other hand was either avg to being on the small side. His sister was shipped to CA once weaned and My neleno lives here in MD with me. Today he is 5 years old and his weight is over 1700 grams, he is larger then some HY Macaws I know. He is a one person bird and I have done everything that I could to keep him social but this did not work for him.

I also have a 6 year old Male Eclectus who is a real sweetheart and goes to everyone. He is very social.

The bond that you are going to have with your GW will be like no other relationship you ever had with anyother animal. GW are known to form very strong bonds with their owner and the one they love. At first, your baby will want to keep their distance from you, this is the time they learn, (Can I trust this perosn) as time goes by, you will see a huge change in them and them yerning to be with you, cuddled, take showers with, eat with, go on trips or walks with you. These actions are all bonding times. I am very excited for you, your are going to have a blast with this new GW. Please post pictures if you can. Best of luck and continue to ask questions. Thanks for posting Joe

Joe, thanks for all the info! Your Neleno looks very large in your picture (more pictures!) I have been visiting Moses three times a week and helping in his evening feedings when I go. I know that the beak gets longer, I guess it's hard to describe what I'm wondering about, I was wondering does it get "wider"? I look at the greenwings on here and then at the babies , the grown greenwings look like their beaks are more massive and wide. I was just wondering does this happen as they age? At what age is a greenwing considered full grown? I am hoping that he and my cag will at least be able to be on the same java tree eventually. My cag is very friendly and since Moses will be a baby hopefully with me watching for any trouble I am hoping that they will be able to be out together! I was watching a hy and a rose breasted cockatoo preen each other at the breeders. This gave me hope that since there is such a big difference in size between those two there might be a chance that my Dorothy and Moses will be friends! LOL

Here's Bongo, what a joy he (going to go with he for now) is to have around. His personality has really started to shine through this week and he has started playing with toys this weekend.
