My intro is in the new member forum, and here is my first of many many questions....Since we will be bringing home a 5 month old Hahns Macaw in the beginning of July, can any of you suggest informative books or magazines. We found a ton of info on the net, my daughter breezed through parrots for dummies and some bird talk magazines, what other bird books are informative and entertaining?
Thanks
Carolyn R

Parrots Magazine out of the UK. They're thin and some of the articles are amateurish, but the info is great.

Welcome to the forum Carolyn.....

i think you will find the best information will be on the internet, many of the better bird books are a tad out of date, though others may recommend some specific titles. Almost all of the bird magazines have fallen to internet readers.....when reading info on the net, keep in mind that a lot of what you will read has been extrapolated from somewhere else & adapted from the webpage you are reading from, without accreditation to the original author/source, so it's always best to seek more than one verification of the information.....even some of us who have been around birds 20 years or more scratch our heads about some of the info that's out there.....one other thing, just because it's sold in a pet store or on a bird related website, that does not mean it is good for or needed by your feathered friends.....

I'm on some 50 bird groups & forums & this forum is one of the best for prompt & friendly information.....much of stewarding a companion bird is common sense and what's best for the bird rather than what's convenient for you.....

Bird talk was a wonderful magazine. I believe you can order back issues from birdchannel.com. I really like parrots magazine, i am able to afford this one in paper so i get that one delivered. I just got my first issue of birdkeeper magazine for the computer and it was awesome. It only comes out 6 times a year though but i have to say i loved it even more than Parrots magazine. Some others are goodbirdinc.com & companion parrot, Avizandum which is African and Birdtalk/birds usa which comes out once a year. Cage & aviary magazine which is the oldest publication, i believe that one is weekly and think I may get it for my e-reader or computer.

I love the Companion Parrot Online Magazine.Check it out, very informative . I like her take on things.

I have owned a blue and gold macaw for years and learned things the hard way. I found the Barrons Series "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot" and "Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior" by Mattie Sue Athan very informative. I wish I read these two BEFORE I purchased any parrots. They helped me understand WHY certain behaviors occur and how to deal with them. If you understand the "whys" then you are more willing to have patience and understanding for the behavior you thought was undesireable or negative. The books I purchased sold for about $10 at a bird fair which I thought was worth the money.

Thank you all so much for the quick responses. I signed up for a diffent forum a month ago, and to be honest it is very stagnant as far as information goes. This one seems great! Great change on my part!
