So it's Ok to give a parrot a bone to chew on?

Perjo loves chicken, I give her a few small pieces of chicken tenderloin each week, but I rarely eat chicken off the bone at home anymore.

Matter of fact now that I think about it, I rarely eat a few things at home now that I have a parrot, just b/c of the risk of them eating it. I haven't had ANY chocolate at home since the day I brought her home.

Whether your Parrot will or will not break apart a chicken leg bone is specific to each Parrot. Some Parrots seem to natural know that the really good stuff hides with in the leg bone. Either the upper or lower leg bone can be provided, but those Parrots that like chicken bone commonly prefer the lower leg bone. The only way you will know is to offer it.

Sharing a meal with a Parrot is part of creating a strong social bond of family. If your choice is to not eat with your Parrot around is because you are enjoying foods that would not be healthy for your Parrot. You may want to look at much wider, healthier diet for your Parrot. The cross-over of foods that are healthy for your Parrot is also healthy for you.

In yet another shameless recommendation; take a look in the Amazon Forum and at its top are two highlighted Threads. Open the one that is titled: I Love Amazons ... On page two, is a segment that provides "Correct Foods For an Amazon" that will provide you an idea as to the wealth of diet that Amazons (Parrot) enjoy. You will quietly see the larger number of cross-over foods that both Parrot and Human alike will enjoy together.

Amy and Smokey love<d> chicken bones. Smokes would literally rip one from my hand when she saw it. One of Amys favorite treats,she'll chew till there is nothing left. I leave a few pieces of meat on too and she'll munch on that also.
BB hasn't even tried the bone,he has however sampled the meat.

Oddly enough though..neither Amy or Smokey cared for turkey leg bones..go figure.

My CAG loves chicken, yet doesn't seem to care for Turkey either. She will nibble on Turkey, but she tears the chicken legs apart and sometimes breaks the bone to get at the marrow inside.

There's something really "Silence Of the Lambs" about this...Just doesn't seem right.

Seriously though, don't you worry about poultry bones splintering? I mean, if your bird can crack a chicken or turkey bone in half to get the marrow out, aren't you afraid of the bone splintering, as poultry bones do, and then the bone shards being swallowed or getting stuck in their mouths, crops, etc.? Serious question because that's exactly the reason you shouldn't give dogs poultry bones. My Australian Cattle Dog got ahold of a chicken bone once and she chewed it up until there was basically nothing left of it, and the only reason I discovered that she got it was her mouth was bleeding like crazy afterwards.

Up until a moment ago, my answer would've been an easy yes, so long as it wasn't in the mouth of a human (or any other mammal) beforehand. But EllenD does make a good point about bone splintering. I've never heard of it being an issue, but that possibility does give me pause, now. Hmmm...

My avian vet gives chicken bones to his Amazon, has for years and years. I'm guessing they don't eat any splinters...after seeing the sweet potatoes neatly separated from the chop, I guess they can handle it.

My local market cooks stuff right in store. I get a "meal" thingie in a black plastic bowl,with two bbq legs/thighs and smashed taters or some sort of veggie.
I can make a nummy bowl for Amy and put a leg bone in and its the first thing she goes for.
Little Beebs just runs away..

Reading vet Dr. Rice's column on secondchance or some name like that, the website, he notes the healthiest parrots he ever saw were owned by the mountain peasants of Mexico who had no access to manufactured feeds. They ate what the people ate. So that means meat, beans, rice, cornmeal burritos?

I've never given my ekkies meat or bones to chew or eat. There's something about it that makes me feel like i'm tricking them into canibalism

I mean they'd never kill and cook a chicken in the wild, so I dont feel like i'm keeping them from something they need. (Well, i'd at least like to think I know them well enough to know they wouldn't kill and cook a chicken...)

ALL of our parrots love chicken bones! The smaller ones (Lovies and Conures) just clean them off, but our 'Zon and CAG eat the whole works. Initially, I was concerned about splinters but, after watching them closely while they ate them, I discovered they grind them to dust before swallowing them. I'm sure the calcium is great for them and I figure that, since they love 'em so much, they can't be all that bad for them. We have to be VERY careful they don't drop such bones to the dog, though!!!

BTW, our 'Zon and CAG also love pork, beef, turkey, pie (especially pumpkin), cake, bread (not the crusts, though), cereal, pasta, etc., and will lustily consume any of those they can get their grabby little talons on!!!

Given a chance, our CAG will sidle over to your plate & grab your entire steak. If you try to resist, he'll let go...then waltz right into the middle of your plate, stand there in the middle of your dinner, staring at you, defying you to move him!

I guess that a bird eating another bird is no weirder than a mammal eating another mammal (e.g., people eating cows).
But... the only meat the Rb wants is BACON, and I limit his consumption (AND MY OL' MAN'S). My ol' man gets it once a week or so. The Rb... once a decade?
