So yesterday my 4yr old talked the misses into a little budgie. :D

So now I have a few questions about it as it is not tame.

First is, how hard are these little guys to tame?(sit on my family and mine shoulder and wander around with Fred attacking feet  )

Second is, how long until its flight feathers grow back?(store over cut the wings so it drops like a stone):( I will get them trimmed properly once they grow back.

Third is, after QT for a month or two how would I go about introducing him to my GCC, or should I never do that?

Fourth is, I picked up a pellet/seed mix. Is this best for these guys or should it be a heavier seed mix?

I'm sure I will have more questions in time but thanks for the help in advance. :blue2:

Congratulations on your new 'baby'. That is awesome. I had an untame budgie and i would say it took him about a month to two months to be tame and then of course our bond grew more and more after that, but he became quite friendly within probably 6 weeks of daily effort with him.
I love the idea of the pellet mix if you can get him to eat it. Budgies can be 'set in their ways' and resist changes in their diet. My little guy flat out refused to eat anything other than seed and some alfalfa, so i bought the Harrisons mash (powdered up pellet, basically) and sprinkled it all over his seed each day.
I had let Percy's flight feathers grow in and never clipped them again, and honestly i can't remember how long it took.
I never had my hand tame budgie at the same time as my conure, but i did have a cage of 3 budgies given to me when i had my sun conure. I put their cages near each other and they loved the company, but didn't really 'interact' personally or bond, just enjoyed having the other around. I'm sure this can vary and like i said, those were not even budgies who came out and flew around the house, but just climbed and played in the cage with each other.
Would love to see a pic of the little guy when you have one. :)

budgies are small (as you probly know) so they are really easy to tame, plus they dont bite as hard. just spend time with him, slowly talk to him, then get him used to your hand... he will soon be tame

How do I get him use to my hand? He hides under his water dish any time I open the cage. He does sit there and look at me when I talk to him.

this is a silly little 'step by step' but it's pretty much the way it goes. move slowly as the bird gets used to you (not the method i was taught btw. i scared the daylights out of the poor bird because i was taught when i bought him to force him out each day and hold him in my hand. i DO NOT recommend what i was originally told to do 20 yrs ago! My poor percy! i tried it a couple times and something told me this was just not right.)
They are so smart and learn so quickly, that once the bird learns to trust you, you can move step by step through the list.

In my experience, a GCC that is bonded to its humans will be disinterested in a budgie and could become aggressive to it. Budgies are wired to be super social and will often approach the GCC and get in its face, which budgies love to do to each other. Be very careful when they are together.

Well so far so good. I can put my hand in the cage and he pays no mind to it. Yesterday I felt I made good progress(atleast to me) as while my hand was in the cage he went and started eating(not the millet in my hand) and then used my hand as a step for him to get to the higher perch. :) Hopefully we keep up with the progress as I would love to take him out and put him on the perch to look out the window. (might have to make another perch if Fred :rainbow1: doesn't want him on his)
