Hi there people! Long time no see! Remember me? I just got another baby blue front amazon! He is the cutest little thing ever!

I will try to keep you all updated on the process of how things go. So far i'm training him to wear the aviator harness and i'm socializing him with me and as many people as possible and there is much more to come! :)

Say hi to Drago! :D :green:

Oh my god she's so adorable!
no I cannot get an amazon as much as I want one
Stupid question but how do you harness train them? I was hoping at ask any breeders for a future feather baby if they can harness train them as I think I would struggle greatly

Baby Amazons just are cuteness overload =)...

It would be awesome to have a baby parrot, you could (as you have done according to pics) harness train him immediately etc. It's quite a different story with these rescued fellows =)

Thank you! :) Hopefully one day you will if you're ready.

The best thing is to train them while young, but I think it is also more an acquired skill/experience that you learn while trying and training. I have read about it alot and I know how to approach them with it. I managed to train my 12 yr old red lored amazon (which was extremely aggressive, and it eventuelly worked. Time & patience is key to succeeding.. Many don't have that and many get frustrated and give up. But with the right training, I believe any bird can be harness trained! :)

Good to know. I did try teaching my GCC when I had him but the sizing wasn't right, despite being told it was the perfect size and he couldn't get his head back out which spooked him and made him scared of anything remotely similar to harnesses

We have 2 flying harnesses (from my earlier CAG and RB2). Åke the Mealy and Elli the CAG have completely destroyed them but that is the point, they are getting used of the material. Now they aren't scared of their own (not broken) harnesses and we can slowly train with them.

If you just put the harness to their neck they will freak out and for sure be afraid of the harnesses in future, get them slowly used of the material and the looks of the harnesses, then with any trick get them to put their head through them (not the smallest loop, use the bigger wing loops) like with treats or something they like. After a while you can get them to put their heads through the small "head loop". When this is completed and they let the loop be around their neck when they eat treats (or do something they really like, up to you) then one of the major steps in harness training is done.

Second one, letting them to put the bigger loops around their wings is easier but you cant complete this before your bird lets you to handle his wings, get him comfortable of you handling (lifting, spreading) their wings and when that is done you can start putting the harness to one wing, after a while the bird gets more comfortable with it and you can get the harness on him. When you have the harness fully on your bird be sure you do something extra exiting and fun (go outside quickly or something like that) so the bird gets familiar with the idea that harness means something super exiting and fun.

^that took 2 months with my earlier (RIP) CAG and almost 6 months with the RB2 (RIP). I've been doing this for 2 months now with Elli (CAG) and he now puts her head through the "head loop", Åke (Mealy) hasn't been training yet with the loops but we've been familiarising with the material for 2 weeks now.

Or the simpler way, get a baby bird and just put the harness on him from the start every day. Done, your bird is harness trained :D

We've used Aviator Harnesses, they are really good (im sure there are other as good harnesses too but i dont have experience with them)

There is size for every bird and you can easily buy those from Ebay if you dont have them in local stores.

Medium is perfect fit for Elli the CAG and Large seems to be perfect for Åke the Mealy

it wasn't holding it near him that caused the fear. Like I say it got stuck on him and was too tight. I had to carefully cut the straps to get him out of it it was so small. He had actually been really good taking treats through it but that incident scared him

That's really pity, you cant always precheck everything so things like that happen but it might be a big step back on training :/

OMG can I ask where you got him/her from?? How would I go about finding a baby blue fronted amazon?!

yeah. I assumed it was all correct but I think they messed up making it. No idea how a tiel would fit their head through it.

Training is no longer an issue as he died so for a while I am parrot-less

Yet another baby Amazon has joined the Amazon Forum!

With this many baby Amazons (and newly joined Amazons), we are going to have to place a Warning above the Amazon Forum regards tons of baby and new Amazon photos ahead!

The Coloration hints of the possibility of a very special Blue-Fronted Amazon you have there. As your baby feathers out and also its next molt, there is all the signs that s/he will be one colorful Blue-Fronted Amazon!

Enjoy and Welcome Back!

Your local blue front amazon breeder should have these. Some sell them fed by their parents at 3-4 months. Some sell them handfed. Mine is fed by the parents and then later on, taken and handfed by the breeder (best of both worlds) And they make the absolute best pets! :)

Thank you all for the wonderful comments! It is heartwarming to see the amount of love and caring being shown in here.

Drago is the cutest little thing ever! Extremely clumsy though, just learning how to walk, perch and is trying to fly as well and failing hard at all that haha. But that's part of the learning process. I took him out with his harness for an hour long walk and he loved it and was flapping his wings in joy! We we're met by many extremely kind friends and people and Drago seemed to love it! (socializing is very good) He is not afraid of one thing so far and my goal is for him to be a freeflyer, which is good, like my Red lored amazon Emil. Drago is a big little boy weighing in at 470 grams and I guess he'll weigh a little more when he grows and becomes more muscular and not to mention more beautiful & colorful. I do realize now how unique he is in terms of coloration. Extra vibrant in a way, and i've seen many blue fronts, but none like him, at all!

I have great plans for him in the future and those are guaranteed! I just wish more people could offer their parrots this kind of freedom that I'm able too. Everyone can do it! :D

Haha yes I think so! I'm warning you all for the bombardment of cute photos that I'm going to post of him as his journey continues! Watch at own risk! xD

Indeed it does! Thank you! :) I thought it was only me. Even the breeder who has been breeding these for 30 something years said that this was the only one that was extra special in terms of coloration. He kind of has the face of a regular blue front but the wing colour of a yellow winged blue front with extra vibrancy. Even his parents and the other chicks did not look like him in terms of vibrant feathers. The rest had less yellow and were noticeably less vibrant. I wonder how he'll look like in a couple years from now.. Wow! :O

470 grams, already!?! That is one big baby BFA! Remember to get your weights first thing in the Morning after the morning movement and prior to the first meal. I would have guessed a large body Yellow-Winged would pull 420 to 440 at that age! But this could be the effects of a well-feed, health baby and if all true could get into 500 to 520 range! Time will tell!
