Timneh African grey
My adopted TAG came with a large quantity of some seed/pellet mixture food. It is what he's been eating for years, but I've noticed that he does not eat it all...he will pick out the peanuts and millet and sunflower first, then just pick at the rest. I give him fresh fruits and greens, but most of it ends up on the floor of the cage.

I'm interested in switching him to a pelleted diet, so that ALL of his bites will be well-rounded in nutrition, and he might be more inclined to eat his greens. He has a mild vitamin A/D deficiency and I want to clear that up quickly.

Yesterday I picked up a small bag of ZuPreem Fruit Blends pellets, which says it is complete nutrition for African greys. I was hoping that the brighter colors and fruity flavor might be a good transition from the crappy stuff he's been eating. He ate a few of the pellets, but I mixed it with his familiar food so I noticed that he ate all of the seeds out first. How can I convert him safely and quickly?

Is ZuPreem Fruit Blends a good pelleted food for him? Are there others that would be a noticeably better choice? :whiteblue:

Bright colors and fruity flavors is generally not good. the bird will find his favorite color and taste and only eat that one. the best pellets are Harrrisons they are little light greenish/brownish cubes. The best diet for Greys are 1/3 pellets, 1/3 fresh veggies and 1/3 seed mixture. go easy on fruit. Fruit to a grey is mostly sugar and contains no real nutritional value to them. I use fruit as a treat, my gray loves strawberries and probably die of strawberry overload if she had her way, lol.

another one that i am partial to is Zupreem natural. and i get this at petsmart store a few blocks from me.

Also there is some really good infomation in the recipes section. i enjoy making new stuff for my FIDS, and bird bread is so easy is silly more people dont make it.

I use Harrisons coarse for my Timnehs. Right now, since they are feeding the babies, I soak the pellets in hot water first. Drain the water and add some Gerber Baby Grape juice. They love that.

Thanks guys. He does seem to be eating the new pellets, but I've been mixing it with his other food so that it will be an easier transition. I will check into Harrisons. I almost bought the Zupreem natural, but I thought that the fruit ones might be easier to get him recognizing pellets as food, since he is used to a brightly colored seed mixture.
I want to eventually get him to eat the best stuff I can afford for him, so maybe Harrison's is the way to go. Thanks!

Denise3mom, that's so exciting about the egg! Congrats! I feed Baby and Tweeter (conure) fresh veggies and some fruit and lots of greens as well as their birdie diets.

:grey: I'm a big LeFebre's fan. My two new Greys, Bindi and Babu, like the Nutriberries, AviCakes and NutriBerries with Pellets. They haven't taken to the pellets alone. Our 1st Grey liked all LeFebre's products. I wasn't totally impressed with the Harrison's, nor were the Grey's.

I strongly recommend fresh fruits and veggies (no avacado, onion, etc.). Additionally, ours love cooked foods like "Bean Cuisine, Beak Appetite," as well as making homemade 13 bean mix (we buy the Safeway bean mix and don't use the spice packet) with pasta. They also like some of the food we eat, like chicken, shrimp, salmon (all grilled without seasoning, or boiled). A well balanced diet keeps them healthy...By the way don't forget the French Toast -- plain no syrup, butter...

My TAG wasn't to impressed with Harrison either. I fed my guy Pretty Bird Gold which has the added Palm Oil that is good for them. I also mix in the mini pellets of fruity Zuprem, as well as some of the exotic parrot mix from Hagen. I really wish my guy would eat more of the fresh fruits and veggies, but he is very picky. He is a rehomed bird, so I'm thinking the fresh stuff wasn't offered to him that much, but I still try to introduce it to him even though I know he is gonna spit it out.

What do you guys think about TOP (totally organic pellets). I have seen them at the parrot store as well as Roudybush. Hope to talk to all of you real soon.

The pet store near me just updated their whole bird section. They got in Roudybush, LeFabre's line of AviCakes and Nutriberries in a bunch of different varieties, as well as a habitat/species-specific line of all natural Kaytee foraging diets that looked really neat to me. The Woodland mix has a grey on the front and has dried fruits, veggies and nuts, as well as seeds, pellets and dried green leaves.

Baby won't eat just pellets...he ate them for about a week, then started throwing them out onto the floor and squawking for more food. I have been mixing about a 50/50 mix of the crappy seed mix he came with into the ZuPreem fruit pellets, but I want to find a diet that will be good for him as well as acceptable to him. I think the Woodland foraging looks pretty good...what do you guys think?
