I'm sure this has been asked many times before and I've looked at topics but can't really find what I'm looking for I guess? lol

I'm looking into getting a few books on companion birds but there are SO many out there I'm lost as to what to get. I know the basics but would love a general book anyway to go over. One I've been looking at since it's sold where I work is 'Good Parrotkeeping' by Robin Deutsch, and 'Parrots for Dummies' (which I heard is more opinion than fact?), and 'The Large Macaws' by Joanne Abramson (which is like $400).

Any thoughts on these or other good books to look for? I understand I can find everything I may want on this forum alone but I'd like a physical reference with everything in one spot too.

I have the Good Parrotkeeping one :) Love it..

I also have
Macaws: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual
by Roger G. Sweeney

Can't say i am a huge fan of Barbara Heidenrich, i have only got one of her books, but thought it was published poorly, and very simple, questions and answers.. I found better information online!

Okee Dokee :)

Just bought 'Good Parrotkeeping' and will look into the 'Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook' along with the other one listed.

Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate all the help from this forum.
I'm just researching for now, learning all I can so when I'm ready I'll be fully ready. ~

Hahaha i think you will find when you get your parrot you will learn alot more than any book can tell you :)

I read those books, hundreds of website, but when i actually got Fargo, that is how i learnt the most!

As far as Parrots For Dummies is concerned, at least some of the content of all these books is opinion rather than fact: and the Dummies author, although she gives her own opinion on the topics that cause regular debate - wing clipping, free flight, mixing pets etc - she's very good at laying out the different sides of the argument and leaving it for the reader to form their own opinion. For example, I have a book on cockatoos that repeatedly states that it's totally irresponsible to keep a bird with unclipped wings, and as soon as I read something like that my trust in the author plummets. Dummies is also a great reference book for diet, health and illness, and the basics of behaviour, so I'd say it's one of the best out there.

Honestly, I don't think any of those books are as good as the internet. There is SOOOO much information available on the internet and on this site that you don't need the books.

I always recommend Mattie Sue Athan's Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior. Bonnie Munro Doane's Parrot Training is another good parrot book.
