Got a late start to his summer menu of foods due to the move and Kiwi has not been eating quite as healthy as normal (I know, I know!). Time to get the little green guy back on his normal diet! Hope my dehydrator gets a boost from the heat outdoors because I surely won't be running it inside this time of year lol! For those who don't know, I dehydrate my chop (and soak to rehydrate before feeding) as well as experiment with other fun dehydrator treats:) Kiwi is a lucky green ducky:green: and has quite a lot to look forward too!

Chop to include:

Broccoli
Collard Greens
Kale
Cabbage
Bell peppers (probably orange and red)
Spicy peppers
Carrots
Celery
Apples
Pears
Peaches
Walnuts (chopped)
Almonds (chopped)
Hemp seed
Pumpkin seed
Flax seed
Rolled oats

I will also be doing some bird-friendly CANDY  for him (he shall never know the difference that it's healthy;)) and found this cool recipe. Will likely be doing beet/cherry and make up my own with various berries (these will also be for the humans lol):

Paleo "Skittles" - Taste the (Real Food) Rainbow - Joyful Abode
(Will be subbing in soy butter, as coconut makes me break out in terrible hives:().

And last but not least, I will be trying to experiment using sweet potato flour in a bird bread recipe (trying to determine how much is a reasonable amount, don't want to overload him on sweet potato!) with some misc. veggie puree for good measure (make sure he can't pick those veggies out lol!):

Sweet Potato Powder

April, you have just given me the push I needed to find a dehydrator. Those candies look delicious and I think my flock would go crazy for them!

The last birdie bread I did, I mixed flours...I used almond, sweet potato and quinoa flours and it turned out pretty well.

Kiwi is such a lucky boy!

I definitely use my dehydrator a good amount. Look for the kind with pull-out trays, makes it so much easier to use than the 'stacking tray' kind! Glad to hear you've used sweet potato flour without issues. I was a tad concerned since that jar in the recipe had 6 POUNDS of potatoes in it and I was a little concerned that may be an OD of sweet potatoes for the little guy. I plan to sub out 1/3 cup of regular whole wheat flour with it and use a mixed vegetable puree in place of applesauce in kind of an applesauce bread fusion.

I'm really interested in how the candies will go over too, but I'm guessing they'll probably be inhaled. Something super sweet that looks like unhealthy human food? Isn't that what all parrots want:18: I do wonder if they realize how much effort we put into their meals as they pick through them and fling stuff:rolleyes:?

Hey, knowing how much you love bugs, maybe you could make Dactyl some worm candies:eek:

Thank you for the tip about the dehydrator! Something like this?

https://www.amazon.ca/Aroma-Professional-Tray-Dehydrator-Clear/dp/B00N3ILYZ6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1467562931&sr=8-6&keywords=dehydrator

I really think I would get a lot of use out of it, especially if I can borrow some of your recipes!

We picked up the sweet potato flour at Bulk Barn, which is one of my favourite places to go:) I think I only used maybe 3/4 cup of each flour, I just kind of added until things looked the right consistency.

Worm candy...sounds like a job for SuperHubby!

That's the kind! Makes it much easier to remove a tray if one food dehydrates quicker than the others, or you can leave one tray out if you ned extra height inside for something.

Perhaps I will just look for sweet potato flour instead of make it? I bet if Winco doesn't have it in the bulk bins, the Bob's Red Mill (kind of specialty flour/baking ingredients company here in the US) factory and store is literally about 15 minutes away in Milwaukie and they are almost sure to have it!

I'm sure I could dig up some recipes to share;) Sprout cookies are always fun, veggie jerky, yogurt drops and of course just drying up fruit and veg without additives or preservatives the store bought varieties have!

I can't imagine making the flour myself, I am not that good a cook/preparer. I'm so glad Bulk Barn has almost everything I need, all ready to use..lol
Hopefully you can find some as well.
I'd love your recipes, I am starting to save so I can get that dehydrator. My friend with the rescue has one, and I sent her your link for the candy...we are going to try making some the next time I go over, thank you! I will definitely be asking for those other recipes as soon as I can get my own machine:)
