My poor rescued canary Gigi had a major bleeding problem earlier tonight, actually I'm surprised she's still alive. She has a slit in her leg, it looks like she wanted to remove her leg band because even while bleeding she was picking on her leg.

She allowed me to take her out of the cage (was probably too weak to protest) and put corn starch on it to stop the bleeding. I then put her in a tiny little hospital cage and gave her some apple and seeds. An hour later I carefully washed her leg and dripped some cool boiled water on her beak (she drank it). I'm keeping her warm (around 80°F) and I'm sure the other birds in the room are sweating!

She's resting in her cage now. Will she be ok until tomorrow or do I have to keep hydrating her through the night? Gigi has lost at least a teaspoon full of blood :(

What is it with me and bleeding birds :(

I am so sorry to hear about little Gigi. Rescues aren't for the faint of heart, are they?

I know it looks like a tremendous amount of blood loss from such a tiny body but I'm hoping for the best possible outcome. They can surprise us and often do.

I sent you a pm. I wish you and your little one the very best of luck. Please let us know how Gigi responds to your excellent care. She's so lucky to have you.

If she appears stable, then I'd leave her be so she can rest. Wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on her throughout the night to make sure she's continuing to do ok.

Thanks to both of you, and thanks Allee for the PM. Gigi made it through the night and now I'm hoping she'll make it until I can get her to the vet this afternoon. I think we dodged the bullet!

I am so relieved to hear this! I hope Gigi's vet visit goes well. You're both in my thoughts.

I'm so glad that Gigi made it through the night. I know this situation must have been so frightening and my heart goes out to you both.

You might want to ask the vet to remove the leg band if that is what triggered this episode. I had Jolly's leg band removed earlier this Spring, and it was relatively easy. No sedation needed.

Please keep us updated on Gigi's condition.

Good news! Gigi is fine and the leg band is OFF! I know to some people it will sound ridiculous what I paid to get this band off plus the antibiotics, vitamins and whatnot I came home with, but I know you all understand what "rescue" means. It's all or nothing!
Thanks for the advice and the good thoughts that were with me all day long. They did wonders for Gigi, the bedraggled wretch who right now is munching on apple, raspberries, and Boston lettuce.

Im crying happy tears with you and Gigi! Please let Gigi know I'm thrilled she had the awful ankle bracelet removed and she's home recovering.

You did an amazing job in a scary situation! I'm glad your effort paid off with the best possible outcome!

I'm sure what you paid would sound ridiculous to some people, but I doubt you'll find any of those people here. Believe me, we understand.

I'm so glad that Gigi is doing well, and that the leg band is off!
