Ghosts believe or disbelieve?

I will start out by saying that I fall into the believe category.
If I had not had the experiences that I have had I can understand the other category.
I don’t want to turn this into a ghost story thread but…
As a child 7 or 8 we lost our cat in a traumatic way. After this happened my older sister and I both felt and saw our cat around the house.
There have been other encounters but in my mind this one proves that animals do have soles and we can expect to see them again.

Well, I believe in spirits, and I believe those spirits can attach themselves to things, people, and animals, but I do not believe that dead people or animals roam about after death. I believe that people go to heaven or hell, and animals die entirely.

That said, my beliefs are shaped by my deeper spiritual beliefs and my experiences as well as those of my family.

The easiest way to portray my theory is that multiple universes and timelines exist, and can theoretically be transited by changing the "frequency" of our being. I use the term "ghost" for lack of a better term/word.
I don't know if they are "echo's " or "left over energy" or some other term I can't put into words.
Both my sister and I felt our "cat" rub up against our back while watching TV laying on the floor.
Our natural first thought was " it's just the cat" but then do a double take and remember our "cat" died and was no longer around. Windows and doors closed and locked, no other animals or people in the house at the time.
As I said I don't blame others for doubting things like this. If this and other things more dramatic had not happened to me personally I would not find the stories believable ether.

My parents had me convinced for a good long time as a kid that the rattling and banging in the walls after we moved into a new house were the ghost of the prior owner of the home who had died there (of natural causes). In reality, some pipes had simply been inadequately wrapped in insulation when the home was renovated before my family bought it and stopped rattling and banging once they were fixed.

I don't believe in ghosts or any kind of consciousness continuing after death/"afterlife" in the traditional sense. I do think science still has a lot to learn about the human mind and the nature of our universe though. I also feel there is a quality yet to be defined which differentiates living things from inanimate objects, likely some yet unknown state or form of energy which may continue to "resonate" after death. Some people (or other animals) may be especially sensitive to such things and their minds process this unknown element as being some kind of 'apparition' or the 'soul' of the deceased in the absence of knowledge or understanding of what it actually is. I think with time, science will be able to define and explain these things. Similar to how early man could observe lightening, but had no means to explain it scientifically, so they came up with various wild explanations of what caused it. Now that we understand it we no longer assign magical or mystical qualities to it even though many of us are still amazed and fascinated by it.

I had a successful career as a scientist, but... science was a day job. I am semi-secretly a total mystic. I have numerous oddball delusions. I am superstitious. I am always on the lookout for communication with the "Spirit World", as friends and family call it. I love movies about ghosts, monsters, other dimensions, demons, etc., etc. Even the greatest ontologists can't agree (to MY satisfaction) about what reality is, so I tend to believe anything and nothing. The Rickeybird might be the ruler of the Universe. He is, as far as my situation goes.

He often calls out names of passed people and pets and flies to apparent 'destinations' to commune with them.

Today's superstition is tomorrow's science, sometimes. In olden times, people were afraid of sick people and stayed away from them lest evil spirits migrate. Today we know about germs.

This. I think that as far as our understanding of the universe is concerned, we have barely scraped the surface. With that, I dont believe that the dead literally stay here just in other forms, but instead, that there must be other things going on. We think of time as something linear but is that true, or is that just as far as our understanding of it goes? I think its totally possibly there are other "frequencies" which different forms of existence roam. And since energy can never be created nor destroyed, the energy that was us, is recycled into new life after we die. I just dont think in the form of spirits but rather other forms of energy which we cant quite understand yet.

I do believe, not in the evil spirit kind of ghosts, but in beloved family members checking in on us. I also believe that someday I will be reunited with my Chazzie, and the other animals who have been a part of my family.

Very interesting thread, and all responses thus far have been respectful and considerate of others thoughts and beliefs. The topic does skate quite close to our rule regarding not discussing religion/politics on this site, however. I mention this merely so that that everyone will remain mindful of this guideline, as discussions that touch upon religion (or politics) have an unfortunate tendency to get rather heated.

Our pet's/companions come and go and I was interested in others opinion regardless of if they agree or disagree with my own.

I agree with everything mentioned above. I believe in 'ghosts', but I do not entirely understand what 'ghosts' are. As human beings, we can only assume, as in this case I do not think we can entirely comprehend what ghosts actually are. I also think it entirely depends on certain religions and beliefs concerning the afterlife.

I do, however, hypothesize that there is some form of energy or physical phenomenon that we do not yet understand and it is that which we contribute to "ghosts". This is no different, in my mind, than our ancestors who believed that mental illness was possession by demons and humors caused physical illness.

I sadly do not believe humans have souls. :/ viruses don't have souls. and yes there are wonderful humans but as a whole we act like a dirty, infesting, and mooching virus on the Earth. Sadly if we were to just live as the animals do and only take what we need and give our bodies back to the earth rather then sealing them in a wood and cement boxes, we would perhaps then be more deserving of a soul. but birds and dogs, i can see how they would have a soul. intelligence isnt a sign of a soul. Im also not religious, so i dont even know if soul is the appropriate word. But i love this community! i love all you wonderful parronts on this site and if any humans do have a soul,it would be all you guys, i feel to earn one you must first earn the love and trust of a bird, they will truly weed out the evil in the world. <3 Ya'll are wonderful!

Have you seen ancient skulls with small sections removed to allow the "evil spirits" to escape? The Museum of Man in Balboa Park once had (perhaps still?) an exhibit of either Mayan or Inca skulls. Some of the patients lived a fair amount of time post-surgery as there was evidence of significant bone regrowth.
