Getting rid of mice/rats with a parrot around

So, I live in subsidized public housing- so fortunately, my landlord has to meet certain health/safety standards to maintain funding.

But I also live in a very old building and we've been having rodent problems. I keep a really clean place and so far, the mice/rats have not gotten to any of my food (I'm meticulous about proper storage). I caught one last week, and I saw another one this morning. It ran under the kitchen cabinets. Housing came and set some traps (non-snap ones).

Skittles is supervised at all times when I am home and he is out of the cage. I am being very diligent about looking out for rodent droppings and cleaning them up. I only set the snap traps at night while I'm asleep (so Skittles doesn't get caught it one).

My question is this- have other people had similar issues and what methods have you used to get rid of them?

At this point I am more interested in getting rid of them than any sort of 'humane' way to kill them. I love all animals, but ANYTHING or ANYONE that threatens Skittles is dead to me.

I worry about how those 'sonic' traps would affect birds.

This is a good thread as I have mice too. I put poisin under my tub where the birds cant get to it.

There is an access panel that can be taken off and put back.

I read that using poison isn't a good idea because the mice/rats will hide back into the walls to die and it will lead to health issues.

I worry about them chewing on wires and starting fires. I just want them gone. Housing said they caught a bunch in the basement and they have sealed up all the holes in my apartment by the heat registers. They redid the heating years ago and didn't bother to conceal the holes.

Fingers crossed for you that by having the holes sealed up means you do not get anymore visitors.

With mice /rats is all about eliminating the big three: Access, food sources, and nesting areas. From there its killing those within the home (apartment).

With older buildings there can be access panels behind kitchen appliances and bathroom equipment. Commonly, these panels are kept in place with a couple of screws. The panels cover service points /fittings, etc... And, also commonly open to other parts of the building. These are areas that placing mice /rat killing chemicals is highly recommended since they are high traffic access areas. In addition, with the panel back in place, your Parrot(s) cannot access the chemicals.

Dead mice /rats in wall, ceiling, flooring areas about your apartment is a problem, but far less than active, growing numbers of the pests. At some point you have to look at it as a reality of living in an apartment in which you have little or no control of what or who lives around you. Or, what means (commonly chemicals) of mice /rat killer is being used in other apartments.

I thought these were interesting. I've never had a rat problem...maybe all the predators in the house deter them. The shelter has a lot of outdoor cats to keep rodent control....they are very effective...though they kill everything and anything lol
